Too Much Xanax -

When I met with my new pdoc a couple of weeks ago we didn't hit it off very well and she changed all my meds except my anxiety meds (which is my main problem). I think I have posted that before. She told me to cut down on my xanax which I was taking 4mg a day. I am now not able to get through the day without at least 4 sometimes 6. I don't know what to do. I had the same problem with valium ended up taking 8 a day and still having anxiety. She said these are the two stronger anti-anxiety meds and that she didn't want to give me anything else. How can I convince her that this treatment is not working. I have an appt next week and would welcome any thoughts. I am starting to feel like an addict but can't get through the anxiety without my meds.
So scared...

I am sorry to hear this, Alison. This is the very real possibility we face
time very helpful with anxiety! I take Paxil with
it. When I was on Xanax alone it did not stop the
anxiety or panic only when I went on the Paxil did the
symptoms improve!!
I totally agree with Jan- tell you doc you need help
getting off this med!! Perhaps taking an antidepressant
before you taper off it will help???? one thing you can
ask her!
I have never had the need to take more than .25 of xanax
but if I had not had therapy and Paxil I may have increased
it also!
If you go to treatment for going off xanax another med
will be given to you so you will not have such severe
withdrawl symptoms so call your doc!! My heart goes out
to you--- let me know if I can help at all!! Judy
Thanks everyone. I am also on Celexa so I already have an a/d also. I think that maybe like medications do, this one is just not the right one for me. My pdoc is not my favorite person so I think I am going to have to be straight forward with her and take part in the meds decision instead of just accepting her "well just stop taking that much xanax". So easy for her to say. Hopefully, she can find an alternative that will work.
Thanks again.
Alison,
is there any chance of you being able to see a different psychiatrist?
Unfortunately, my insurance doesn't offer a lot of choices in pdocs. I called every single one on the list. Some didn't call back, others were not accepting new patients and then when I finally found this pdoc, I had to wait almost two months to get an appt. I feel kind of stuck with her for now. Hopefully, just because the first appt didn't go well that doesn't mean the next one won't. I will try to go in there with my head a little more together. Although, since my head is going in all different directions, I thought that was why I was there. I do have a very high tolerance for any medication, unfortunately. Anyway, I will try to be patient and if the second appt does not work out will definitely find another pdoc one way or the other. I need relief, not addiction.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Alison,
Their is not much I can say that has not already been said.
I am sorry that you aren't connecting with your pdoc. As Mia said, that is VERY important. When is your next appt.?
Take Care!

Alison,
I just had to up my klonopin and i have the same concerns. My pdoc is going to start taking me off in the next few months and i am NOT happy with that...LOL
Hugs and take care.. remember that you are the patient and you have rights also!
Thanks. I am going to excercise my patient's rights on my next visit and maybe establish a better relationship with the pdoc.
Why are they taking you off the klonopin if it is helping?
