I've decided to start looking. I called the insur. co and they said that I can try someone else out while seeing my current t/pdoc. Of course they went and upgraded the dr's I can see so now I have more choices in what kind of dr to see. I know what most of them do but have confusion about one. Not sure how to make the choice of which kind of dr to see. Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions? Here is the list. TIA

Clinical Nurse ~ Don't think I want this b/c this is what I have now and I have issues w/ the combination b/c I have very little time for therapy, it's all med management most of the time.

Counselor

Psychologist

Social Worker

Psychiatrist ~ I know I'll need if I see either of the last 3 listed.

Psychiatric Social Worker ~ This is the one I am confused about. Not sure what they do.

From my experience, *most* counselors/therapists have a degree in social work, psychology or guidance & counseling. As with all professionals, they deal well with most disorders, but some specialize. I would think a psychiatric social worker would be a good fit if you told them what issues you needed to work on, Danielle. If they're specializing in something else or don't have experience in your issues, they ought to tell you upfront. There are some social workers in hospitals & nursing homes that don't do counseling. They help patients find services upon discharge, help in applying for benefits, etc.

Nowadays, psychiatrists pretty much deal with prescribing meds & having you return for med checks. Like you pointed out, if meds are involved, you will need a *T* & a pdoc. That's what I have & my *T* is a social worker. Good luck! (((hugs))) jan

Thanks Jan. I was thinking the social worker. I know it has less to do with the title as it does the trust you can build and the help they can offer. My current dr (Jane) is great, she's as sweet as can be but that just isn't enough.

I seriously question her dx & the meds she has me on. I need a 2nd opinion. In the mean time

Hey Danielle,

When I called to make the appt with my tdoc the office asked me a little backround about why I was going to see someone, then they talked to all of the therapists and decided which one was best equip for me. They were right... then my tdoc recommended my pdoc. It all worked out great the way they did it.

Let me know how it goes....
