Hi and I'm considering trying an anxiety med at the recommendation of my therapist - who mentioned fast acting vs. slow to work meds.

Hello GP! It's nice to have you here.

I am not certain what you mean by fast acting vs. slow to work meds. I will go with what I think you might mean.

I recommend xanax to anyone that asks. It works in about 15 minutes & is great for anxiety. I have found nothing works better for me.

I use Ativan (Lorazapam generic) 0.5mg and it starts working within 15 minutes. I have used Xanax before and didn't like how I felt on it. It made me feel kinda de-connected with my body and was tired on it. With the Ativan, all I feel is calm, it doesn't make me tired at all.

Hope that helps!

I also take xanax and I like it because I only take it when I am feeling anxious and it works pretty quickly (15 mins. or so). They have some of these meds, like valium and xanax, if memory serves, that come in an XR (extended release) tablet. Those did not work as well for me. Give the xanax a try, if it succeeds in calming your anxiety, use it as a tool like someone (I think Jan) said.

I have to echo what Cassia said. I really like the ativan better than the Xanax, but the Xanax does work well for anxiety, it just made me very tired.
I think everyone had great things to say.
Please let us know what works for you!
