Thanks to all of you who sent me supportive messages yesterday. I appreciate them very much.
As for my company, apparently they have just contracted this thrid party insurance firm to manage the short-term disability within the last month. What is puzzling about it all is that I get ten business days to reply with filled-out forms. That puts me at December 20. Our office closes on the 23rd until January 3. I had told my company that I would be able to come back on January 3 before all this claim stuff even started, so we are really talking about three days here. All this pain for three days. The firm pays for our short-term disability and we pay a small portion for long-term. I am in Vancouver, British Columbia however, so the cost to the company is not medical but involves only my wages. Psychiatrists here are free so they do not pay for that.
My appointment today with the psychiatrist was helpful. I cried through the whole thing. I know he sees that all day and his waste paper basket certainly had enough Kleenexes in it to prove that, but I feel bad about it anyway. Same thing happened when I spoke to the insurance agent. I also got a call from the head of a program offered to anxiety sufferers, run through my local hospital. It is a group therapy set-up, but they also offer short-term one-to-one counselling. I will be getting in to see them this coming Monday. So more help is on the way, and the hospital program will give the insurance people yet another assessment of my condition, which is what happens at the first appointment (this Monday).
The psychiatrist also offered for me to go into an adult day treatment program. He said he thinks I would benefit from it. I am sure he is right, but my main fear is of going crazy and I worry that doing an out-patient program might worsten that fear or make it seem more real. Has anyone done one of these before? How did you find the experience?
Today I literally begged the insurance man to do my paperwork as soon as he gets it because I know I will remain in extreme crisis mode until I get a decision from him. He said he would try hard.
I will keep in touch as things progress. I have another appointment next week with the psychiatrist as well as the hospital. I hope you are all doing well!
