Jan, Sheri, ... nurses...

Well first off I have to say that I am having a FIT.. the OTHER side of Ryan's nose is bleeding a bit. Jay is in CT 3 hours away and I won't tell him until he gets home. Its not bad but enought to scare me.

About the surgery, she said that they are going to give him an IV 1st then sedate him through the IV... is their some way that they can sedate him with a shot before the IV so it won't be as bad.... ? Is their some reason (other then the meds going right into the vein) that they won't do that 1st?

When I gave birth the WORST thing about it was having to have an IV...

I understand about not being able to be there when they put him to sleep but I am still upset about it... My friend went to another hospital and she was able to hold her son until he was alseep.

Anyway, just wondering.. I am in such a panic state with all of this...

Thanks Girls!

Heather I think there may be ways to sedate him a bit before the IV but in the form of a shot it might hurt just as much.

Heather I don't think a shot will be any easier on him. You will be there when they put the IV in and that will be the hardest part for him. When they start the sedation, he will already be used to the fact that the IV is in place and he won't even realize what they are doing. And I'm sure you will be in the recovery room waiting for him to come out of surgery. This is such a difficult thing for you, I know. Just be strong so he doesn't sense your fear. Children bounce back so fast, unlike us adults that worry, worry, worry ;)

Sheri Ann,

He had his flu shot and was fine with it, thats why I'd prefer that.

How much "power" (for lack of a better word) do I have over what goes on with him? When they were in the NICU for 8 and 9 weeks I was their Mother and I pretty much had all the say...

Any ideas???

I think that needles, whether in a shot or IV form are equally traumatic for kids.

I really don't know what to say except that you need to discuss all your fears & concerns with his doctor. I would think it is the hospital policy if you can't be with him while he falls asleep. When Jillian had her tonsils taken out, she was 4 y.o., I couldn't be with her, either. We brought her cabbage patch doll & they put a mask on the doll & did everything to her doll first, so she wouldn't be scared. They tucked it under her covers and wheeled them off together. She was fine, I was not. I felt like you do. I did take her for a tour of the hospital beforehand, so she wouldn't be frightened by the long halls, the bright lights, etc... I wanted her to be as prepared as a 4 y.o. can be.

Heather One thing I just thought of is that
you are reacting like an adult! Ryan is not an
adult nor does he have panic!! My daughter had her
gall bladder removed when she was 9 she is a very
sensitive person I expected the worst!! Well when I had
to have the same surgery 3 months later she said
"Mom look at it as an adventure!!" I was shocked!!
Maybe it was the forgetful drug with her but this really
floored me!! Heather take care and I hope that Ryan is OK
tonight!! So sorry for all you are going through! Judy

heather i am so sorry that you have to go threw all this with ryan.reading your post made me feel so bad as i had the same uneasyness and sad feeling as you do,my 3 yr needed surgery and it really made a mess out of me.i felt so guilty about it.i to was having a hard time with the iv thing, and requested some kind of sedation to take at home for her.they gave me something and it made her really loopy.i explained that i was having a very hard time with it all,so that did help but,it ate me up then BECAUSE I SEDATED HER.these are our babies and no matter what, it was very hard for me but, little audie did not have a clue what was going on.i dont even know what to say
