My Nights are getting BAD
| Fri, 12-09-2005 - 12:33pm |
Hi Everyone-
Lately my nights have gotten really bad. I wake up in the middle of the night, usually after an hour or so of sleeping and just plain panic sweeps over. Its as if I can not think of anything else, and I do not know how it occurs. I do not want to go to sleep for the fear of something terrible happening to me. This has not happened to me before since I have been diagnosed w/ anxiety and panic attacks. This started about 2 weeks ago.
I have been feeling aweful. I have been getting these headaches from my temples all the way around(like wearing a headband). My left side is worse, its actually tender around the temples and my ear hurts. My Dr's put me on Augmentin and it did not help, I called them and they have not called back. I'm sooooooooo scared there is something terribly wrong w/ me.
Please help!

Is anything particularly stressful happening in your life these days? For me, it often shows up when I sleep in either restlessness, insomnia or bad dreams. Hopefully there's nothing really wrong and your doctor can reassure you of that when he calls. Let us know what happens!
I'm sorry to hear this, Donna. I am sure that the headaches are triggering your fears that there's more
Hi Donna, sorry to hear your nights are getting bad.

Yeah I had an MRI, and a CT Scan done in August and all were negative.
But I still can't feel comfortable with that. What if something has happened to me since then??
Yes, the PA beleives that I have/had a sinus infection, so she perscribed Augmentin. Which did not help. I'm just sooooo scared there is something wrong. The pain is primarily on my left side. I will get twinges in other areas as well. I have noticed that these wake up attacks have been around the time of the headaches. Which have been going on for a week before Thanksgiving.
I want to feel better. I'm so scared.
I hope your doctor gets back to you soon. Do you have any medication that you can take at bedtime? A xanax or klonopin would relax you & hopefully keep the panic at bay while you sleep. I've never had night time anxiety, thankfully, but know so many people that have. It seems like their minds are just working all night while they sleep and then bam! they awake with anxiety. Are you on any meds right now? Maybe a sleeping pill would help. I take benadryl if I'm having a bad time sleeping, just a small dose, but I don't take any other meds with it. Please let us know how it goes with your doc.

Donna, I am going to type this out for you, its from a book that really helped me when my anxiety/panic started almost 20yrs ago, I have had all the symptoms you have written about, but here is a piece from the book about sore scalp I hope it hepls:The soreness around or on top of your head is caused by contraction of you scalp muscles as a result of continuous tension. You may notice how relief comes if you press your scalp or place a hot-water bag where it is most sore, This should prove to you that the cause is local, where you can reach it, and not deep - seated. These are not the symptoms of a brain tumor. Since contraction of tense muscle causes pain, it naturally becomes worst when you worry and inproves as you relax and release tension. Pain-killing tablets help, but only a little. With the relaxlation that follows acceptance, tension eases and the pain gradually lessens. However, this scalp pain, this iron band , is a most stubborn symptom to cure so do not despair if it lingers awhile. I assure you that it eventully goes. The hardest, tightest band will gradually lessen and disappear with acceptance.(Just abit more ) All over headache: tension in the neck and scalp can cause a headache that may extend from above the eyes , over the top of the head , to the base of the skull. and into the neck. There may also be very tender spots over the temples ,at the base of the skull, and down the sides of the trapezius (not sure what those are) the stout muscle that helps support the head and achnor it to the body, ( ok thats what those are LOL) . In addition, the head may feel heavy, or the scalp muscles so sore that resting comfortably on the pillow at nite mat be difficult without a painkiller. For permanent cure, tension itself must be eased. However , knowing that tension is the cause of the pain ( not a brain tumor) relieves some anxiety and hense some tension. Anyway Donna this is just a bit of what the book tells us on that subject anyway. Like we all no relaxation is the key , try to do some of the relaxation exercises like the other girls suggested and I hope this will help reasure you that its all stress and tension causing your pain. I remember having the same thing Donna and I still do at times , so reading this was a good reminder to me also. I have taken these pieces out of the books by Dr.Clair Weeks , Hope and Help For Your Nervous and More Help for your Nervous, I bought them 20 yrs ago and they were my saving grace at the time, I still use them to reasure myself that I have anxiety/panic not a fatal illness, sometimes they help sometimes they don't. Its all in acceptance and floating through the symptoms of this horrible thing called panic. I know this is really long but i really felt what your going through and if it helps you that will be great, if not maybe it will help someone else. Take care Donna

I just wanted to add that I ALWAYS feel sore and have a headache after a panic attack or when I am anxious...
I had a panic attack on Sunday night with anxiety ever since and I have had a headache all week as well as aches and pains, so much so that I have only exercised one night this week.
Heating pads work wonders for me, as well as a hot bath...

THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! that was very kind and thoughful of you!!! I will look for the books as well. I do not understand this anxiety stuff, its riduculous. Why are our brains so complex? Its scary! I want to enjoy the holidays and life again!
I just took a Xanax, hope it helps! Its pathetic how I'm afraid of everything now. I was so independent and my self esteem was great. Now I just go day by day! I don't have the shaking, or sweating. I just have the being scared thoughts and feeling funky is just the best way to describe my symptoms. Hence why I don't understand how this is anxiety, it doesn't seem normal to me.
Thanks again, and have a wonderful friday!
-Donna
