My DS is sick and I'm panicking

I'm sure he has nothing more than a stomach bug. He was fine yesterday and woke me up around 1am with stomach pain. He had been on the toilet with diarrhea and after that his stomach began cramping up. It's intermittent and when the pain starts he then vomits. Then he feels a bit better and rests and maybe an hour later he does it again. No fever and he's very coherent. But, I can tell my hypochondria is now turning into 'hypochondria by proxy'. I find myself worrying that he is dying and that it's something serious. I was up in the middle of the night on WebMD: the one site I need to stay away from. It just made me worry worse.

For now I'm just keeping a good close eye on him. Giving him fluids, checking his temp (still no fever) and talking to him about how he's feeling. He seems a little better this morning than he was last night but is still having upper abdominal discomfort. And I think his muscles are all aching cuz he's having a heck of a time getting comfortable. If he's still like this in the afternoon I will call our family doc and see what he says.

You know, I came so close to bundling ds up and bringing him to the ER last night even though he wasn't running a fever and even though he was very uncomfortable in pain, he wasn't screaming or writhing with it. I just imagined the worst and panic set in. I'm now going on three hours of off and on sleep. I had him upstairs on the couch while I sat in the living room chair right next to him.

Please, he needs P&PTs so he can feel better quickly and so that his brother and sister don't catch this too....if it is a bug. Maybe it's food poisoning but he ate what we all ate last night and the rest of us are just fine.

I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks.

Jennifer

Sounds like you're doing all the right things. Keep and eye on him and let us know how he's doing later today!

I know how awful it feels when your little ones are sick..

Just remember that when we are tired anxiety seems to be worse, that could be playing a factor in how you are feeling.

I would suggest laying down with your little one and resting as well... spend some time together watching Christmas movies and cuddling.

How old is ds?? I would have at least called the MD & let them make the decison as to what to do. My ds pediatrician has a nurse hotline that links to a major hospital an hour away & I've never hesitated to call, even tho I know I am a hypochondriac. I'd rather be safe than sorry. I hope he is well, please let us know the outcome.

(((Bluemarlin_girl))) Please let us know how the child is doing. I have to agree with Sheri Ann. It's always best to err on the side of caution. Children's illnesses don't always follow the book & they have a difficult time expressing how they feel. Something as alarming as this should be reported. Don't be ashamed or embarrassed about *your* anxiety. Doctors are prepared for calls from freaked out moms. My girls are 29 & 18 & I still worry myself sick. LOL Sending P&PT's your way. jan

Well, it ended up being quite a day for both me and Cory (who is 11, btw). I had decided to take him into urgent care because he kept getting that pain in his upper abdominal area and he was near tears from it. Well, about that time I suddenly got hit with something. BAM! Just like that I was nauseas and vomiting a little. My heart was racing and I was experiencing chest pains. So naturally you can imagine I was a bit delirious too. I tried to start my car, no go. Couldn't reach DH for nothing. No neighbors around. I have no close friends in this community because we're still fairly new around here. So I called the Pastor of our church but was unsuccessful. In desperation (and probably part 'panic' too) I phoned the local police department and asked if an officer could run us up to the urgent care. They sent an officer and in the meantime my Pastor called back. The pastor was willing to drive us but it'd take him about a half hour to get to my house. The officer wanted us to get to the hospital sooner than that. So they got an ambulance. No sirens or emergency or anything like that. But the ambulance came and drove me and Cory to the nearest hospital.

Turns out it is a stomach bug; nothing serious. Thank God. I was so worried that it was Cory's pancreas or something like that. And my chest pains were gasteointestinal; my heart checked out fine but on the way to the ER it was beating 138 bpm and they were concerned. Oh, and my bp was up kinda high too. So we spent the afternoon there, me and Cory. They were so good to us. They brought in an extra cot so we could be in the same room together. Cory was running a temp but the vomiting had finally subsided. And my vomiting seems to have subsided too now. My head hurts real bad and my stomach still hurts but my heart rate went down, thankfully.

So now we are home, resting. Cory got his appitite back so he ate a little. I had a little too but not much. Mostly just water and Gatorade. Now hoping the other two kids don't catch this nasty bug.

You did good Mom......sounds as if you held your panic at bay while you made some difficult decesions. Glad to hear it was nothing worse then the bug but as everyone said better safe then sorry. Hope you are both feeling better by the time you read this.

I'm so happy to hear that everything worked out well. It is so scary when our children are sick. You did the right thing getting him & yourself checked out. You just never know what it might be.
Hugs,
Sheri Ann
