Can anyone tell me anything about the medication abilify? I've read all the clinical liteture but am now interested in others use of this med. Why you were on it (if that's not to personnal), did it help, any side effects, what did you like or dislike about this medication. I would be happy for any input.

Thanks girls i know if anyone can tell me about it it should be some of you.

I'm curious to know too. I see p/tdoc on Wed and I know we'll be adding an antipsychotic to my line up since Seroquel has failed me again.

Jan i've posted on the bipolar board and the schizophrenia board since what i read about it these were the two mental illnesses it was used most frequently on. I guess I'm confused cause i've never been dx with either of these illnesses. I'm dx with PTSD and SAD. I'ld call and talk with the pdoc but he seemed so unreachable and I did not feel comfortable with him. Until I can get some form of insurance I'm kind of stuck with this guy which has needless to say raised my anxiety level.

(((Keitha))) That's a difficult situation to be in. I think the doctor should have explained this med better & told you why he felt it was needed. Sometimes they get busy & forget. Sometimes, they don't put themselves in our place & feel the worry & concern we may have.

FWIW, seroquel is an antipsychotic & I was put on it for severe anxiety & the inability to sleep. I don't think the literature suggests it should be used for either of these problems. But, doctors have experience in prescribing meds & my pdoc knew this would help me. Ablify isn't a *mind altering* drug. I know it helps clear thought processes & improve concentration, so a person is able to cope better & solve their problems. Of course it helps decrease delusions & hallucinations but ONLY if you HAVE those troubles. Have you considered giving it a shot? Just to see how you feel? His reasoning behind ordering this med may not have anything to do with the literature. Just some thoughts I wanted to share. Good luck! (((hugs))) jan

Thanks Jan, It will take me a couple months to get this med since the medication program i go through that's that amount of time for meds that have been approved to arrive. I figure that will give me the time to think on it and gather any opinions I can. Like I told Sheri in chat last night alot will depend on how i feel once the med finally arrives, if i'm still feeling as i now do i will definatly give it a try cause this is not a good place to be.

Hi. My pysch doc that I had been seeing early last year thought I should try Abilify for anxiety. This was after going through all kinds of medical tests to rule out medical issues and to diagnose the problem which turned out to be anxiety. I was not on any meds at that time. I had been having the anxious attacks for a couple months and was scared very badly. As always, when a doc gives me a new med, I research the heck out of it before taking it. That can be good and bad. I will be honest with you and say that I am paranoid about meds, more than I should be, and ended up not trying it. I went to another doc who put me on Zoloft and have been on that ever since. Please do not assume it is bad stuff or anything like that on the account of me not taking it. I was just in a place at that time mentally where everything scared me so when I read about Abilify, it scared me for some reason and I did not take it. Zoloft scared me too but I finally tried it because I was getting so bad off that I could not eat and was not able to function hardly.

Keitha, I was also put on the wellbutrin for anxiety, but nowhere in the literature is that listed as a use.

Kim, You are very correct in stating researching meds can be a good and bad. After doing my first initial search I agreed to take the Lexapro due to it seemed the lesser of the evils. I think I would have been ok with being prescribed a nerve pill that i could have used as needed. But this one just threw me for a loop, though to be truthful i wouldn't have felt any better if it had been zoloft or prozac just to name a few. Like you and i find most of us i'm abit parinoid about medications to begin with. When it finally arrives here i'll see how i'm feeling and take it from there. When you're desperate enough you'll try anything.

Thanks for answering,
Keitha

K Hi One thought for you as I told my son!
I suffered for many years with a disease no doctor I went to
had ever heard of back in the 60's and a good part of the 70's!
There were no choices except go thru it tough it out! When I
think back to what I was told I am amazed that I am here to talk
about it!! I HAD NO CHOICES!!! My son scared to take anything
I said well look at it this way if it don't work stop taking it!!
It cannot do any permanent damage- if you will! My life has changed
over 100% because of medication and therapy for a disease that seems
more common or diagnosed now- PANIC DISORDER! SOme docs suggested to
hubby that I be instutionalized YEP!! Can you imagine????
So I stand on my soap box and say there is NOTHING TO LOSE BY TRYING!!
It is scary and makes you wonder BUT at least there is help now!!
Good Luck and I hope that I have helped you a bit! HUGS! Judy
