If you feel she's right for you, Jennifer, then go with it. This is becoming very common place in all medical practices. I haven't had my pelvic exam by a dr. for years. I always go with the OB/GYN NP's. They are former colleagues of mine & I trust them implicitly. Good luck! (((hugs))) jan

I prefer a nurse practitioner over a psychiatrist.

Seeking Mental Health Care

If stress, interpersonal, or job-related tension is interfering with your daily life, you may want to seek mental health care. You should seek treatment as soon as possible, before you feel that you can no longer cope with the situation. These problems are just as important, and as treatable, as other medical problems.

When you seek mental health treatment, you may see a variety of health care professionals. Depending on your health insurance, a case manager may, in conjunction with your health care provider, assess your health needs, refer you to a specialist, and coordinate the services that you will receive, and/or follow up on your treatment. In some cases, you may only speak with the case manager over the phone; in others, the case manager may be a qualified practitioner that you will actually visit.

The qualified practitioners that you may see during the course of your treatment include the following:

  • Primary care provider (PCP), the physician who provides you with basic health care services.
  • Physician assistant, a trained professional who provides health care services under the supervision of a licensed physician.
  • Clinical psychologist, a professional with a doctoral degree in psychology who specializes in therapy.
  • Psychiatrist, a professional who completed both medical school and training in psychiatry, and is a specialist in diagnosing and treating mental illness.
  • Clinical social worker, a professional with an advanced degree in social work who provides services for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental and behavioral disorders.
  • Registered nurse, a trained professional with a nursing degree who provides patient care and administers medicine.
  • Nurse practitioner, a registered nurse who works in an expanded role and manages patients' medical conditions.

Well I'm not sure where Jane falls into that list, She is a Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Practioner. What I initally thought was nice is that she is licensed to write rx which apparently is a new thing in CO. There are up's and down's. I think what's most important is that you get what you need out of the sessions and it is a person you can relate to.

Goodluck

I love Nurse Practioners, they have saved my bacon, been an advocate for me, stay with me long enough to be effective, are more assessible than doctors and know their stuff.
