I was so afraid that if I asked for something like Xanax my doctor wouldn't give it to me and would think I was drug seeking, but the panic attacks were becoming more frequent and more disruptive. Finally I went in to see him and it turns out I didn't even have to say the word. We talked about my attacks and after listening for awhile to me describing what they're like for me, he prescribed Klonopin as well as Inderal. The Inderal surprised me because it's a beta blocker normally given to lower blood pressure, but it can also be used for anxiety. The way my doctor explained it is that it's kind of like Klonopin is for the racing thoughts and the psychological aspects of a panic attack, while the Inderal works on the physical aspects. Because so much of my attacks involves a racing heart and shallow breaths, he thought the Inderal would be a good drug to try so that it would work to even out my heartbeat and respiration.
And wouldn't you know that since my appointment (about 2 weeks ago), I haven't had a single attack? Not that I want to have one, but still. I find that very interesting. It's almost like I feel better just knowing I have the drugs available to me.
