Morning Anxiety???

Good Morning all, just wondering how many of you have anxiety in the morning when you wake up. Sometimes I wake up just fine, other days, the anxiety level is awful. I have noticed that if I have been very busy at work and a lot going on it's worse. Is this true for anybody else. I then take a XANAX and try to calm myself down. It's a terrible way to start a day. This was one of those days. Hope everyone has a good weekend. Any suggestions on how to alleviate this morning anxiety problem, would be greatly appreciated. I have tried breathing exercises and relaxing, but I always seem to rely on the magic pill to help me out. I would so like to do it on my own. JanW

Hi JanW,
Welcome I am lynn and kind of a newbie myself, Yes, I used to get moring anxiety really bad and as you I had to take something, until I changed meds, now I am almost anexity free almost, but on occassions I still have PA and that is what I concentrate on more now getting them completing under control, but I use the coping techuques on the board, I can't tell you which one works best, but sometime, I have to try them all until I control them, that is the trick controling them not letting them control you, Right!!! well I can't say it works all the time, but most of the time it does. So hang in there and later I'm sure others will have more ideas. sorry I couldn't be more of a help.,but I can tell keep coming here and that will help also, the ladies here are super!!

Hang in there and welcome
LYNN

Hi Jan,

I am sorry to hear about that. Funny you should mention it though..

I woke this morning feeling VERY anxious and out if it. I took a klonopin and went and layed down for another 1/2 hour. I have no issues with using the med, it is there to help and I take it everyday.

You already know all the techniques, one that works for me is music. I put the radio on and just sing along to myself. It seems to distract me...

I hope you are feeling better!

Hugs,

Jan, it is very commong to get morning anxiety, your body wakes up suddenly and vital signs are jumping dramatically....these are things that very easily trigger anxiety. my one tip would be to wake up 5 minutes earlier than you normally do and just lay in bed before you actually get up. this will give you a few minutes to get used to your waking state and will help you relax I hope. I hope that makes sense :)

I get a bit of anxiety in the morning too. I got an alarm clock with birds chirping to wake me up...it starts soft and gradually gets louder, not such a jolt. Also, I pause for a minute before standing as I am prone to dizziness when standing and of course that just jacks up my pulse and worsens any anxiety already in progress.

Don't feel bad about Xanax...if this is a biochemical thing, why should it be "wrong" to take something to balance it out? I'm trying to manage things without meds too, but so far it is not severe for me. If it gets worse, I'll have to consider it.

Thank you, thank you, everyone. You all have helped so much....my day yesterday with the help of Xanax was OK. I had to work yesterday...been working more this week and I think that's a problem cause it's a different routine again. I have quite a stressful job at times and I think this spring that's going to change. I'm kind of stuck in this situation til April but then some changes might be coming. I appreciate so much your replies and your help. Jan, our family is quite well....my ds is adjusting to the changes in his life because of the divorce, and financially things are going a little better for him. We do have a lot to be thankful for and have to remember that and not dwell on the negative. My DH tries to understand the anxiety but he really is clueless. LOL.....he thinks it should just go away now. But oh well, he is very good to me in all other areas. I hope everyone is doing well, and again I thank you all for your support. I knew I could come to this board and you would all understand. Isn't that the best thing!!!!!!!! Thoughts and prayers to everyone. JanW

Oh....good old morning anxiety! I felt like the queen of morning anxiety becuase I had it so bad. There was a week that I woke up every morning and vomited I was getting myself so worked up. I tried every single exercise there was in the book and tried relaxation tapes, yadda yadda yadda! I was using Xanax or Ativan about every other day to just get through the day. The thing I learned was to just use the meds as soon as it started and not try to fight it off for hours - I would wake up like clockwork at 4:30am and start the routine. If I took the meds right at 4:30am, it would help me get back to sleep and make it through the day.

I did not want to keep up that routine of relying on the medication, so I choose to take some action by starting cognitive behavioral therapy with a therapist - along with also listening to the Lucinda Bassett Midwest Center tapes - Attacking Anxiety and Depression. The help has been amazing. I am happy to say that the anxiety has decreased a ton. I used to sometimes feel relief early in the day, other days the horrible anxiety would stay with me throughout the day. Now, I wake up with much less tension - it is still there - but decreased. And I have not had to take a pill for over a week and a half. Woopie!!! The therapy has really just helped me deal with my overall thought process and will hopefully serve as a long term fix for me!!!

I can totally feel for you - there were days were I thought I just wanted to die I could not deal with this anymore. This board has also been helpful in learning more and realizing - YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!! Not everything mentioned will work for you, but I found it motivating to just get some help. I hope things get better and that you find what is right for you. It is hard, but I have found you just have to be really willing to work hard...and relief can come.
