Hi all-

Someone suggested these to me...has anyone had any success with them? Any contraindications you know about?

It seems like a mild approach suited to mild anxiety/PA...if it works.

Any thoughts?

Amy

Hi Amy,

For school we did a project on herbals so I can share some information about St. John's Wort. First of all it is an antidepressant, you would need to take 300mg 3 times a day. The side effects include dizziness, restlessness, sleep disturbances, hypertension, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and allergic skin reactions(hives, itching, rash). Also this should not be taken with alcohol or many other meds. If you wanted to try this herbal I would definately recommend talking to your doctor and seeing if it is compatable with any other medicaiton and if it would be right for you.

As far as the B complex I take them regularly. B vitamins are not stored in the body so if your body does not need it you will pass it right out. Be cautious with vitamins A, D, E, K. The body stores them in fatty tissue and too much could cause side effects.

Hope this info helps,

Lisa

Thanks for the info, Lisa! Wow...all those side effects? Half of them are things I'm trying to get rid of!!!!

I don't take any other meds, but I don't really have a doctor either (except for DH, but he's a radiologist, not a GP).

I think I'll start with the B vitamins....

The thing about side effects is it that it's only a possibility. Each person is different. I have trouble with meds and if there is a side effect I will have it. When I got my immunizations for school I got really sick too.

Also if I don't drink enough water I feel dehydrated and tend to be more anxious. I gave up caffeine too, which is dehydrating. Must be a connection...lol. Who really knows.

Good Luck Amy,

(((Hugs)))

That *was* quick...thanks Heather!!!!

Most of that sounds doable, except for the carb aspects. If I eat oatmeal with bananas and orange juice, and no protein, I'll be in for a very rough day....!

Most of the other things I can definitely improve on, though, especially the vitamins, exercise, and hydration. I"ve already lopped out almost all caffeine aside from my occasional dark-dark chocolate (only a couple squares), and all alcohol. When I'm careful, refined carbs are gone, too, though I struggle to maintain my diet when I'm in school. On the other hand, my definition of refined carbs is stricter than most people's, so maybe it's not so bad...Sandwiches on whole grain bread and cans of soup with veggies in them seem to be my best compromise..but why do they put sugar in *everything*?! I had roast beef hash last night, and the last ingredient was sugar! Ridiculous.

Bleh...I'm rambling. Thank you very much Lynn and Heather for your thoughts on this topic. It looks like there some more organic changes I can make before adding in herbal remedies.

Amy, if in the future you deceide to try herbs may i suggest you go to a health food shop and talk with the sales people. I've found that most health food stores hirer very educated people in the know about herbs. There are excellent herbal blends that they will probably inform you about. Before my anxiety got too high I used herbal blends for years to keep it at bay. Add a good multi vitamin and you should be on the road to recovery.

This is a little off subject, but I am into green tea & the many health benefits that it provides. Salada makes many that are naturally decaffeinated through the water & effervescence process. I made a pot today with the green tea & lemon blend & drank a couple glasses, iced. I love the blueberry! It's very tasty. It solves the problem of no caffeine & no carbonation.
