I saw my psychiatrist today and told her that I didn't think the Effexor was working anymore.

Hi Jennifer,
I'm sorry I didn't mention in my first post that I am not OCD but I have done an enormous amount of research and study on OCD as well as other disorders. I hope I don't come across as a "know-it-all" or too "technical" sounding!

I first have to say that I am so happy that you sought help! I couldn't imagine going for 15 years on my own. I had one PA and I was crawling to my doc's that day :). You are obviously an amazingly strong woman and I really admire you.

That said, I can tell you that Risperdal is what they call an atypical antipsychotic, most often prescribed for bipolor disorder and schizophrenia, but is often combined with other meds to enhance the effect without upping that meds dosage. It isn't exactly positive how it works, but it does balance out dopamine and serotinin levels. It seems to be very effective when combined with other meds such as Effexor or other "mood stabilizing" meds. Seems to work faster then others and has low number of side effects. I won't go into all those :). But, the only thing I will say is how often I have heard that Risperdol can elevate blood sugar so you may want to talk with your therapist and see if it is necessary to test your bs or you may be on such a low dose it won't even be an issue.

I know I can't tell you personally how this affects you, so I really hope someone with first-hand experience can help you out there!! I hope I could help you out a little bit. Keep us updated on how it works out for you :).

About 14 years ago, I was put on risperdal for a short time as the anxiety/panic was severe. I never questioned it, as I had alot of trust in my dr. @ the time. I was started on luvox & it hadn't gotten into my system yet. I don't recall any side effects. It helped me get some sleep & decreased the troubling thoughts. In about 3 months, I was taken off it & did ok. HTH, Jennifer. Let us know how you make out. Good luck! (((hugs))) jan
