Life after Lexapro?
| Tue, 02-28-2006 - 3:24pm |
Hi,
I've never been here before. I thought maybe I could get some help. I have been suffering from GAD for 3 years now. After the birth of my son 11 months ago I decided to try Lexapro (an anti-depressant largely prescribed for anxiety). It truly was a God send. I now am feeling stronger and better than ever and have decided to ask my doctor if we can start the weening process. I was wondering if anyone here has ever gone through this? If they were successful or had to go back on? Once on medication is it a never ending battle? I have done the attacking anxiety and depression home program and read Lucinda Bassetts book. I think I can deal with it now and want to come out of this fog I feel the meds have caused.
Any input would be helpful.
Thanks,
Nancy

Nancy,
I, too, went on Lexapro after the birth of my daughter three years ago.
Hi, Nancy & welcome to our caring community. Congrats on the birth of your son:) If it's any help to you, we have women who went through their pregnancies without meds. We have folks who use alternatives to cope with their anxiety disorders & no meds @ all. It can be done. I think Jennifer hit the nail on the head. Don't do it alone! Get some professional help. That is the safest & most effective way. I wish you lots of luck.
I haven't been on an AD for panic/anxiety for almost 4 years. I occasionally take a klonopin for an panic attack. Using alot of methods in the *coping tips & tricks* folder below has really helped. I meditate, belly breathe, practice positive thinking & relaxation. When you get a chance read through what is posted. Drop into our chats. Post anytime. Our members are willing to share their experiences & coping techniques. We'll be glad to lend you support as you work with the GAD without meds. We care about you & hope you're soon @ your best. (((hugs))) jan
I just started on Lexapro for panic attacks & anxiety last week, so I have no input on coming off of it.

Sheri Ann good luck with the Lexapro I was a little tired the first 2 weeks, but after that it really has helped so much. Your mind really slows down (in a good way). My husband makes fun of me sometimes because I used to be so on top of things and now I'm a little forgetful. What he doesn't realize is that I would obsess about any little thing until it was complete, then and only then could I get it out of my mind! Now I can actually have moments where I think of nothing and the peace is wonderful.
I feel ready to try it without the meds now, but when I needed it, it was a great help!
Thanks again for the replies, I'll let you know how my Dr visit goes next week! I will definitely check out the rest of the board too!
Nancy
I obsess over everything, too.

Hi Nancy,
Welcome! I am lynn and glad to meet you. I was on Lexapro at one point for 6 months I
just got off and had no side
effect. Like I said tho everyones is different, but I don't think you will have any
problem, but it is scary, but you want to try it and that is great! good luck and if it
doesn't work than don't beat yourself up ok because you tried and that is all we can do,
Good Luck and keep us posted.
(((Big Hugs)))
Lynn
