Hi. I need some suggestions. I have an intense phobia. It's of..(pardon me if it's gross)..of throwing up.

If I hear of the virus, I get upset.

When I was a kid I was in the hospital a couple times for throwing up, so I guess that's
part of it.

I want to get over this. Any suggestions?

Hi! Nice to have you here. You are NOT alone! I hope that gives you some comfort. I have had emetaphobia for many years. I do my darndest NOT to throw up. Sometimes the nausea is very bad & I am sure letting go would make me feel a whole lot better, but I just can't do it. Of course there's times that I have no choice. I remind myself that this is a normal bodily function.

Like many anxiety sufferers, it probably has something to do with loss of control. That can be very uncomfortable for us. Facing fears/phobias in small doses armed with coping techniques we have learned is the best approach. Check out our *coping tips & tricks* folder below. Belly breathing, positive thinking & relaxation have really helped me. It is possible to overcome these things. Good luck & GBU! Keep in touch. (((hugs))) jan

LOl, your not gonna like my suggestion though :). One of the best ways to get over a phobia, clinically and statistically proven, is desensitization. You may want to find a therapist who specializes in phobias and treatment of, especially your kind. It is usually short-term therapy, ranging from 6-18 weeks. First, you will go for an evaluation and decide along with your therapist the best method for proceeding. Usually, with desensitization, in your case, you would start out trying to figure out what aspect freaks you out the most and then through a series of weeks you would be introduced to your phobia in a safe place and under controlled circumstances. If you truly want to overcome and be cured of your phobia I would definitely say go see a therapist, if you just want to live with your phobia go ahead and do the relaxation and breathing exercises. :) In a phobia like yours, the success rate is phenomenal for overcoming and curing. Hth's a bit and good luck to ya!!
