Afraid of the Dentist?Does thinking about going to the dentist make you break into a cold sweat? You're not alone. But with dentistry's many advances, diagnosis and treatment gets more comfortable all the time.

The American Dental Association offers these suggestions for easing your anxiety:

  • If you're tense or anxious, tell your dentist and the dental staff. Getting your concerns out in the open will let your dentist adapt treatment to your needs.
  • Try to choose a time for your visit when you're less likely to be rushed or under pressure. For some people, that means a Saturday or an early-morning appointment.
  • If the sound of the drill bothers you, bring a portable audio player and headset so you can listen to your favorite music.
  • While you're in the dentist's chair, try visualizing yourself relaxing on a warm beach.

That shot that makes your heart race *might* be epinephrine. It is added to the numbing medicine to make it last longer & controls bleeding. I am very sensitive to it & the dentist has that listed on my chart. I always remind him, though because I have panicked in the chair before when I was given it. They make numbing medicine without the epi, so ask for it. It works fine.

Also, we have a couple of dentists in our area that are listed in the Yellow Pages as *catering to cowards.* You can be sure MY dentist is one of them. LOL GL! (((hugs))) jan

Since this was becoming such an interesting thread w/invaluable info for others, the moderators moved it out of the *coping tips & tricks* folder below. This way everyone is more apt to see it. jan
