So last night was my very ANXIOUSLY awaited counseling session. I don't remember if I mentioned it before, but the appt was through the Employee Assistance thingy from DH's job. A lot of employers have them...where they offer to pay for some many counseling sessions for their employees and their employees' familys.

Heather~
I'm so happy that all went well at your appt. I hope you get referred to someone you really like and it works out for you. As to your question about who knows...until I was 18 no one knew. I kept it inside like it was this ugly wart I didn't want anyone to see. At 18 I told 2 close friends who began to help me realize what it was. At 19 I told my parents and boyfriend (who didn't understand and was horrible about it). After that I told more and more of my friends if the topic came up. You would be surprised how many people actually do have the same feelings as we do and I didn't even realize it until I started opening up with people about it. The important thing, no matter who you tell, is not to be ashamed of it. That isn't healthy and you have nothing to be ashamed of. You didn't choose it. You wouldn't be ashamed to tell people you had cancer would you? I don't see it as any different with this disorder. Be proud of even the small steps (like seeing a therapist) and celebrate yourself and the fact that you can and will get over this!

All in all, I think that you have a good plan in place to deal with the anxiety. I hope the therapist that you see long term meets your expectations. One size does not fit all, but try to keep an open mind going in. You didn't begin having troubles overnight, so naturally it will take you & a new *T* some time to identify the areas you need to work on. As for self help books, there is a thread in the *coping tips & tricks* folder below.

For me, I kept my anxiety a secret for many years. Too many as a matter of fact. I felt a big relief when I finally decided to come clean, Heather. I believe that when I finally let go, I was able to like myself more

So far, I've just been reading from the beginning, some of the descriptions of the different disorders and stuff, trying to get a better understanding of where I fit in. :) I fall pretty strongly under social phobia, other than my specific phobia of driving.

I've only just started looking at it so I don't know where I'll go from there... I'd be glad for some people to discuss things with though!! :)
