Hi, i'm a 19 year old teenager, I'v ben struggling with ocd/depression for the past 3 years but lately it got so bad I had to withdraw from college, and come back home. I have been hopitalized 2 times for the past 2 months and the doctor reccomended ECT. I wnat to know has anyone here had thsi tretament. If so, how much memory prior teh treatment was lost, because I really really want that. I've been tormented by thoughts everyday. I don't want to live anymore if this ect tretament failed, i want to forget everything and start over.

I am very sorry to hear that you are suffering like this. Your questions need to be directed towards your health care provider. To the best of my knowledge, ECT(shock therapy) is not the recommended treatment for anxiety/panic/phobias. Those are the subjects we deal with on this board.
As a nurse, I formerly assisted with ECT. Most patients were suffering from depression. Though much research has been done, not everyone experiences memory loss. Those people who do have memory problems experience it temporarily. In most cases, the memory loss is the events occurring during the time of ECT. That means that ECT is NOT used to erase memories. Nor, does it erase memories from the past, so a person can start over. With a clean slate, so to speak.
Once again, speak to your dr. about these treatments. I wish you the best of luck. Sending P&PT's your way. (((hugs))) jan
PS You might want to ask questions on the Depression Support board.
Hey there,
I'm sorry to hear you're struggling so much...this must be a very difficult time for you. I would also recommend posting on the depression board. You might find a more in-depth answer from someone there.
My friend's mom had to be hospitalized for severe depression and was given ECT. Her recovery has been remarkable, and she doens't remember much abot the period before her hospitalization or during it. Of course, this will be different for everyone. It's really good that you're getting help and already talking to someone about all of this. I wish you the best of luck and I'll be thinking about you!
