Have any here drank because of mental disease? Have you gone to therapy for both problems? Could you share your experiences with me? What do I ask and what do I look for? My father had bi-polar.
I'm more interested in a therapist that specializes in Anxiety, Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic attacks than one that specializes in addiction. I'm not sure if I can find one. I never had any kind of drinking issues for 25 years, as the problems started only 2 years ago. I'm not trying to make light of any of my problems, but I have been hospilized with severe panic attacks and no drinking involved.
Thank you for your response. I have to undergo an evaluation first. Are there any questions I need to ask first?

Have a good day!
Thought of the day:
Life - brief interlude between nothingness and eternity.

My Mom also had Panic/ Anxiety disorder as I do. She used alcohol to self medicate and eventually became and agoraphobic, alcoholic. She spent her life cooped up in a tiny apt drinking until she finally had a stoke. It was a very sad situation. She died 3yrs ago in a nursing home. I'm not totally down on alcohol but it should not be used to medicate yourself. You will need to address both the panic problem and the use of alcohol in your therapy. There are many good medications that can be used along with your therapy. If you read through the posts here you will find many of the girls are using meds and doing well.Be sure to mention the acohol use when you undergo your evaluation so your therapist knows all that he/she is dealing with.
Come to the board and talk, it has helped me alot. Also the coping tips in the lower part of the posts are really helpful. I'm fairly new here but feel the board has been very helpful. Grace

Back in my early 20's, I didn't know about social phobia. I knew I was shy but didn't know that this could be lessened through meds, therapy

I didn't say I was putting it on a back burner, just that I wasn't trying to make light of it. I don't crave alcohol...so I didn't want a therapist that specialized only in addictions.
I've already had one Psych evaluation, that diagnosed my problem (last summer). Generalized Anxiety with underlying depression, using alcohol to control some anxiety issues.
I've decided to try therapy again, but with a psychiatrist, not a psycologist (he's the one the gave the evaluation)
