This was in today's issue of Emotional Health from Waterfront Media. Maybe you'd like to share your thoughts. Is there someone who has been especially supportive of you?

Dealing With Anxiety

In addition to seeing a therapist, many people with anxiety disorders benefit from also joining a self-help group and sharing their challenges and achievements with others. Talking with friends or a trusted member of the clergy can be very helpful, too.
Family support is also important for people recovering from an anxiety disorder. Ideally, your family should be supportive without helping to perpetuate your symptoms. If they trivialize your disorder or demand that you get better without treatment, you may suffer more.

Stress management techniques and meditation may help you stay calm and could enhance the effects of therapy. There is preliminary evidence that aerobic exercise can help, and it is known that caffeine, illicit drugs, and even some over-the-counter cold medications can aggravate the symptoms of an anxiety disorder. Check with your physician or pharmacist before taking any additional medicines

"many people with anxiety disorders benefit from also joining a self-help group and sharing their challenges and achievements with others."

This is my group!! I share all my challenges and achievements here and it helps.

"Talking with friends or a trusted member of the clergy can be very helpful, too. "

You guys are my friends...LOL. But I also have 1 friend that I can talk to about this stuff and she is supportive, not critical.

"Family support is also important for people recovering from an anxiety disorder"

I don't get ANY family support, they don't understand.

"If they trivialize your disorder or demand that you get better without treatment, you may suffer more."

I have had to deal with this from family, a couple friends, and actually here a few times. The OMG what is wrong with you, you have nothing to worry about, you will be fine comments can be condescending no matter who they are from. My anxiety is very real and if I knew what caused it or if I could control it I would! If I thought I would be ok I wouldn't have anxiety either...LOL. No rhyme or reason to it sometimes and it feels like being belittled for having it when people are insensitive. And we all have different situations, triggers, coping skills etc. so it can be hard for family and friends to offer support when they don't understand why someone has anxiety when the same situation doesn't bother them. ...Just my 2Cents.

"Stress management techniques and meditation may help"

I try to meditate, pray, and reduce stress with lists! It helps to get things on paper so I don't get overwhelmed.

"exercise can help, and it is known that caffeine..."

I need to exercise more, would help w/anxiety and body image. And I already gave up the caffeine!

~~ thats why i'm at this board! everyone here is helpful & understanding, since they're dealing with the same thing as i am. only a few of my friends know about my anxiety. the one i tell everything is though is tim (my fiance).
