No Katherine you're not crazy....I know exactly how you feel...My mother was an airline stewardess for 25 years when I was growing up... I practically grew up on a plane...and one day almost overnight i was afraid to fly...I'm now 26 and the idea of flying makes me want to vomit... What i usually do is get some medication from my doctor and that seems to get rid of some of the anxiety. I too have GAD and the idea of being on a plane freaks me out.. i'm also agorophobic and don't like being in places I can't get out of_ i.e. planes !!
have you talked to anyone about this ?? There are workshops that they hold on flying and overcoming the fear of flying.. i've heard that they are great...maybe something to look into. Sorry I don't have more advise...but i know that you are going to be ..and you are going to have a wonderful vacation!!
Hello, Katharine! Nice to have you here. You are NOT alone. Many of us with anxiety have the same or similiar fears. It isn't always easy to identify where the fear came from, but in your case you remember when it started. I have found from personal experience that traumas are right up there as triggers for anxiety, but so are control issues. I would be ok if I was a pilot, train conductor, bus driver, taxi driver etc. I do fine if I am @ the helm;)
Meds & therapy in combination are known to be very successful. Alot of folks who post here, even fear meds. We have a *coping tips & tricks* folder below that has helpful ways to deal with anxiety without meds. I occasionally use clonazepam(from the benzodiazepene family) for severe anxiety/panic. Antidepressants work well but they need to be taken on a daily basis. I have had the most success with belly breathing, relaxation through meditation & repeating positive affirmations. The latter is sort of a self hypnosis technique.
