Xanax addiction.

My hub has suffered from depression and anxiety for a couple of years now. He recently bottomed out and had to confront several substance-abuse issues, including a dependency on the Xanax that his Dr. had Rx'd and told him to take "every day." He's now in recovery, committed to going to NA/AA mtgs, etc. But he's very frightened of having a full-blown panic attack and not being able to take his xanax.

Of course - his attacks are much milder and less frequent not that he's stopped abusing & throwing himself into rebound anx/depression. But, please share your experiences of NON addictive meds that work, more holistic methods, homeopathics, herbs, ETC.
Thanks.

Hi! I am sorry to hear about your dh. The only meds that I know of that are *non-addictive* are antidepressants. They are used successfully to treat anxiety/depression. You will learn alot about them on the Antidepressants Medications board: http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/listsf.asp?webtag=iv-bhpaxil&nav=start

I have heard of St. John's Wort for depression and kava for anxiety. They are herbal supplements you can get over the counter at a drug store. Hope this helps!
