Question about Ativan?

I was thinking of asking my Dr. about Ativan. I suffer from social anxiety, but dont' want to take a daily medication. I am okay in most situations, however, I feel as though I could use something just when I need it. I've heard you can take ativan when you need it and not everyday. Has anyone used it, and if so please give me some info... does it work well, side effects, etc...?

Thanks!

Hi, Cheryl! WB! I have only used ativan once & it made me very sleepy. But, all the benzodiazepenes such as xanax, valium, etc. cause that @ first until you become adjusted to them. These meds do have an addictive potential & generally they're only prescribed for short term use. There are many folks on the board, including myself that have used these meds on an *as needed* basis, without problems. They can be an effective tool in dealing with anxiety/panic. You still have options of learning other ways to cope with your feelings. Also, CBT is something with lasting benefits. You & your dr. know what's best for you. Good luck! Keep in touch. can you take xanax when you know you'll need it, or do you have to take it everyday? I could use medication when I have to speak in front of people at work or I have a party to go to, but I don't need it when I'm at home or hanging out with my fiance, etc.

I was giving ativan in the hospital for a panic attack.I personally did not like it.I was just out of it and slept for 8 hours.I couldnt carry on a conversation for nothing, what my mind wanted to say came out of my mouth a whole different way.The ER doc gave me the smallest dose, cut in half and I was looped.I take klonopin now as needed and it dont do that to me.It just relaxes me.
