I get a sick feeling when I think about college and being surrounded by all those people, having to make friends. I've always been nervous around other people but it's getting so much worse. Now I just want to hide away, I hate answering the phone or even responding to an email. Then my chest gets tight, I find it hard to breathe. Sometimes it's so bad, I have to bite down on my tounge or want to destroy something or myself. I feel like I need help so badly I'm almost ready to drive myself to the hospital. Is this anxiety or depression? I'm so confused.

sounds like anxiety to me...do you have a doctor? you should talk to your doctor about this. they always want to rule out physical causes first, then he could refer you to a psychatrist or therapist of both, what ever he and you feel is necessary.

just based off of the short paragraph you wrote thought it sounds like anxiety to me...i truely believe a doctor is the place to start to get help, hang in there and hopefully you can nip this in the bud before you start college. also, its normal to be very anxious about starting college, don't be hard on yourself.

Thanks for responding Heather- I actually am going to be a transfer student and I was a little anxious starting the first college but now... something is really wrong. I am being treated for bipolar disorder but I don't know how to bring up this topic to my psychiatrist, I'm just too shy and I'm afraid he won't believe me. I hope I manage to bring it up tomorrow, though.

Hi! It may be a combination of both anxiety & depression. If it came on over the last few months, it could even be a medical illness. The first thing you can do is get a good check-up to make sure. If you have had alot of worry & concerns all your life, you should be upfront with the dr. so he can make an accurate diagnosis & advise you on what treatment you need.

I am sorry you're feeling so down. Please don't give up hope. Whatever your diagnosis, it's treatable. Many of us have felt like you & are learning to cope with our conditions. Please read posts from others, so you will know you aren't alone. Join in chats & take a peek @ our *coping tips&tricks* folder below. Good luck & GBU! We want to see you succeed.
