Irritated by barking dog

I don't know if I'm on the right board, but I'm wondering if my anxiety affects my tolerance level. My neighbors started putting their big dog in a crate in their hot garage. They leave him in there while they go away for a few hours at a time. And from what I saw the other day he didn't have food and water in the crate. That alone is a question of cruelty and I've been leaving messages at my local humane league but so far haven't received a response. I've contacted my neighbors several times about this and nothing has been resolved. This initially all stemmed from the fact that they used to let him outside barking for hours at a time, but they've gotten better with that. It's not like he barks continuously like he used to, but when he starts I don't know how long it's going to go on or when they are going to get home. I hate going home anymore because I don't want to deal with the dog. I just cringe every time I hear it start barking. I have to hang out in my apartment with my tv and stereo up as loud as it will go so I can't hear it. Sometimes I feel like I'm being unreasonable, but I just wish they would be more considerate. I'm at my wit's end! It drives me crazy! Any suggestions for dealing with this?

Welcome! It's nice to see you here;)

I am mysified as to how this is an anxiety issue. I would be just as outraged as you are in this situation & it wouldn't be my anxiety. I think this is normal. You have every right to be concerned about the mistreatment of this dog. Also, you are entitled to life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness if you live here in the USA. You certainly don't have any happiness when you can't stand to be in your own home. I think you're doing all the right things. I would continue to notify the animal authorities but how about the police? Also, check your local authority for noise & animal ordinances & see what laws are being broken & file formal complaints. Good luck & GBU! (((hugs))) jan

We have a neighbor who lets their dog stay outside and bark.

I guess I just feel that someone without anxiety would better be able to disregard some of the barking, and go about their business in their house. I can't let it go, I get so worked up - it consumes me. That's why I wasn't sure if this was the right board to post this on. But I guess the barking would get to anyone whether you're anxious or not. The township told me that the only way the police would come out is if they had complaints from two different households. And since I'm the only one that is on the side where the garage is, I'm the only one that can hear it. Actually when I got home yesterday from work, I had a message from the humane league. They said they've been out to my neighbor's house a few times to assess the situation, and agreed that the crate in the hot garage is not the best thing for the dog. They haven't been able to talk to the neighbors yet because they haven't been home, but just wanted to let me know that they are following through with things. That made my day - at least I know somebody is on my side now.

I wish everyone would be as considerate about their dogs as you are! I think a lot of my anxiety stems from, like you said, not knowing how long the barking is going to go on. It sounds like your situation is worse then mine though, at least I don't hear the barking at that time of night. Except for one night it was around 3 am, and he was out barking for 15 minutes straight. I confronted my neighbor the next day about it, and he said he must have fallen back to sleep after leaving the dog out. Hello... if your dog has to go out at that time of night, let him out to do his business and bring him right back in. Why would you even take the time to go back and lay down? Anyway, luckily, that was the only time that happened.

I am sorry, Daisy. I didn't know that you had anxiety. Shame on me): Of course that sort of annoyance would be a trigger for you or most anyone. I know noise, crowds, many distractions can set my nerves on edge. Let us know if this issue gets resolved. I am curious how the humane society treats this. Here the owners would be fined, put on notice & eventually lose their animals if they failed to comply. Good luck! (((hugs))) jan

Well, I thought things were well on their way of being taken care of after that call from the humane league - I got excited too soon. Last night the neighbors were away until around 10:30 and the dog was out in the garage barking. So, I don't know if the humane league just hasn't gotten a hold of them yet, or if they just don't care. I had a major break down about all of this last night. I guess I have to start apartment shopping again - for my own peace of mind and sanity, I cannot continue to live there. I've been contemplating buying a house recently and didn't want to move again until I buy. So, that's the frustrating part - I'm not ready to buy yet and I really don't want to move to rent. I love my apartment and my living situation has been ideal for the past 3 years until this dog moved in!

Do the neighbors own the house or are they renters?
