Xanax Question

Tomorrow I am going on an 1 1/2 hour car ride with my husband driving. The car ride is no problem as long as there is not a lot of traffic. In the past, I only took Xanax if I got stuck in traffic.

My question is will taking Xanax before I go on the drive prevent me from having a panic attack if we get stuck. I have never taken Xanax as a precausion before only at the onset of a panic attack.

Thanks for your help,

Elana

P.S. The problem a couple of weeks ago with my son and the Wicked threatre show is resolved. The person on this site that suggested using a mediator was great. I husband took that role. Thanks for everyone's support.

Yep, it should prevent a panic attack!

If I were you, I would take it only if you see traffic building up. Because if you take it and nothing bad happens, then you'll feel all groggy from the xanax.

Good luck

If I know I'm going to be in a situation that will trigger panic and anxiety, I take a smaller dose of Xanax. Works great form me and the smaller dose is less likely to make me sleepy. If I don't take the smaller dose when I'm feeling good, when I feel bad it takes much more Xanax to make it go away. That is how it works for me!

Lot's of people take their anti-anxiety meds preventively. It should work ok, Elana. Over the years, I have found that if I wait until the attack, it's too late to take the med. Usually, before the med has time to take effect, the attack is over. Also, with practice I have learned to relax, belly breathe & prepare myself mentally for an upcoming fear. Mine is driving on bridges, through tunnels or on the interstate. Good luck! (((hugs))) jan

I'm not too sure about driving, and getting stuck in traffic, but when I go to the dentist, I have a huge fear of having a panic attack right in the middle of things so my dentist told me to take a xanax before coming and it will help me be calm and avoid panicing. I dont see why it wouldnt be the same for your situation... I would definetly try it!! (((Hugs)))

Jan, we have the same PA triggers! my first really bad one was driving over the Rte 301 Bay Bridge (over the Chesapeake Bay) in MD. Are you familiar with this one? It is terrible-- about 3 miles long and incredibly high. It was Sept 11, 2001 and I had to drive that way to avoid passing the Pentagon after the attacks to get to my moms since my dh was stuck out of town (on a plane) on business. He was stuck for 2 or so extra days.

Anyway, over the last 5 years, it has expanded to virtually all bridges, tunnels, and heavy interstate traffic. (I get panicky when driving directly next to cars, and worse, tractor trailers. If I am alone or cars are well spaced, I am okay.)

Before I leave this life, I am going to drive that Chesapeake Bay bridge. I have the brochure here to remind me everyday! I don't like bumper to bumper or any impediments in my way. As long as driving is free
