celexa problems

I have been taking celexa for about 6 weeks, and everything was GREAT, more energy, less anxiety, more motivation to get things done/exercise, increased sex drive... EXCEPT, it causes such extreme hives and itching on my skin that I scratched until I bruised and bled. The doc gave me allergy meds but they don't help. I just had to quit becasue I can't take the itching. The itching has stopped so I know that's what it was. I was taking Lexapro before and had to stop for the same reason, that's why I switched to celexa. So since I havne't taken celexa for 2 days I feel dizzy, unstable when I walk, tired, and irritable. I really want to continue taking medication for my anxiety but I can't deal with the skin problems. Anyone had these problems? Do you know of any med that doesn't cause this? Also do NOT want to take any thing that causes low sex drive. That's very important to me.

Celexa and Lexapro are almost the same med, so it would make sense you would have the same reaction to both meds.

Hmm, I wonder why she gave me celexa after I didn't tolerate the Lexapro? That's weird. I'll give it another shot with her, but maybe I need to find a new doctor?

Maybe she hoped the difference was just enough that you would be able to tolerate it.

When I was on Lamictal I got all itchy. And when I get off a med, I get the same reaction that you get....feel all weird. There are so many antidepressants out there, one is bound to work for you.

Good luck!

Really? It's been about 2 months total between the lexapro and celexa and the hives/itching have gotten progressively worse. It's very unusual for me to be so sensitive to any medication so I don't know what's going on. But I know it's unbearable.

An increased sex drive with Celexa? Wow. I quit taking it after 6 weeks because it made my sex drive vanish into nothing.

Have you tried Wellbutrin? It's not supposed to lower your sex drive either. I hear you about the sex drive thing. All the SSRIs cause low sex drive for me, and therefore I refuse to take them. Wellbutrin is not a SSRI and has worked out well for me. It has fewer side effects than the SSRI class of drugs (Paxil, Prozac, Lexapro, Celexa, etc.).

Well now she put me on Paxil to hopefully get rid of the hives and itching. Anyone know anything about the side effects on Paxil compared to Lexapro and Celexa?

Ick, Paxil. I know everyone responds to drugs differently, but Paxil was not good for me. It caused weight gain and made my sex drive disappear. All of the SSRIs can cause similar side effects. Again, it depends on the person and what dosage you're on.

Those are the 2 things I am most worried about... It's sad to hear that... if it doesn't work this time I'm giving up on meds.
