Anyone else have bad insomnia?

I'm in a really vicious cycle here. I've always been a night owl and have gone through periods of insomnia, but when I get more depressed the insomnia gets really extreme to the point where without taking a sleeping pill, I don't get more than 4 hours of sleep on my own. Yet I can't take a sleeping pill every single night and anyway, if I'm going to take 1 I have to take it no later than 9:30 p.m. so I can get up the next morning and then things don't end up getting done around my house when I turn in so early.

GAH. I hate this. No matter how tired my body is, I still can't fall asleep easily at night. I don't fall asleep during the day, but I have noticed I'm making more mistakes at work and it's really hard to concentrate.

Anyone else going through this kind of thing? How do you break the cycle?

I go through it too sometimes which really is the pits because it makes my anxiety even worse when I'm not getting enough sleep. Sometimes I try Benadryl but it only seems to knock me out half the night. Mostly I just read light reading material until I finally conk out. After several weeks I usually start sleeping again. Very frustrating! Wish I could help more!

I have had spells of insomnia, but never took any sleeping meds. I find that settling into a routine each night, avoiding any arguments or upsets before bedtime is very helpful. Have you tried Celestial Seasonings sleep tea? I have used the belly breathing & my ocean sounds on the alarm clock to lull me to sleep. It doesn't always work & when I get super frustrated, I practice the relaxation exercises. There's alot of sleep info in the *coping tips & tricks* folder below. Good luck, Laura! Hope this passes quickly for you. (((hugs))) jan

As it happens, I bought some Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime tea yesterday and it was very yummy. I had a cup last night and also took a warm bath. Both were very nice and relaxing--but I was still up until 3 a.m. Sigh.

Oh yes, I bought some about a week ago as a reccomendation from a friend who said she uses it and it works wonders with no side effects in the morning! I haven't tried mine yet, and actually hers was the regular sleepytime tea - I found some called "Extra Sleepytime Tea" with an extra ingredient - valorian? I think that should put you to sleep even faster! And it's all natural herbs and stuff. She said she's usually out within about 30 minutes or so .. if I ever get aruond to trying mine, I will let you know how the "extra" one works

I had one of those sleepless nights last night. And now today my anxiety is overwhelming! I even took some Xanax and am having a hard time even trying to take a nap. Very frustrating. I know lack of sleep makes my AP much worse. Augh! Time for me to try the sleepytime tea. Maybe I will ask my hubby to give me a relaxing back rub tonight too.
