I'm back again :( I was doing really well, my palpitations had gone away for awhile...or they were just not bad enough for me to notice. But last night i had the feeling that my heart had skipped then started fluttering. I coughed and it was gone; left me on edge. i was afraid to go to sleep last night! and now my heart felt like it skipped agian. I have come to the realization that obviously if this were anything, something would have happened long ago since this has been going on for almost a decade. anywho..what do you ladies do to keep yourselves calm when your palpitations come back from a dormant phase?

I hate that feeling! I have had tests run to make sure my heart is fine, and of course, it is. Knowing that (and if you are young (or even semi-young) and healthy, chances are very good your heart is very good!)I just breathe and remind myself it is only anxiety/panic. I also remind myself it will go away quickly. If I have a hard time calming down, I put a cold pack, a cold soda, a small bag of ice, anything cold on my neck. That really helps and I read there is actually a physiological reason but I can't remember what it was! I highly recommend signing up for the newsletter from www.anxietycoach.com . I've learned more from that newsletter than anywhere else.

Hang in there!!!!!

Big HUGS!

I don't know if what I have experienced is the same as you, I never thought that it was because of anxiety, of course I have only recently realized that I had anxiety issues my whole life, so it could be. I have noticed at intervals on and off for most of my adult life, something that a doctor referred to as "extra beats." I noticed it when I was pregnant a fair amount-- and one time I actually used a stethescope when I was feeling it and listed and instead of the normal "thump-bump" I heard "thump-ba-bump" I would notice it for a minute or two, with no other symptoms( I can feel a squeezy feeling, like I can feel my heart beating), and then it stops. It is most common when I lay down. When I talked to a cardiologist about it, he said that it is not uncommon for everyone to have extra beats sometimes, and that some people notice them and others do not.

But the advice he gave me would work for you even if it isn't the same-- as long as you have no other concerning symptoms at the same time, like chest pain or shortness of breath, then you don't need to worry. Now I know that you can get shortness of breath with a panic attack, so I wouldn't assume that you need to worry if you do, but if you don't , try to just think of it as "normal" and not worry.
Easier said than done, I know.....

Palpitations are very scary. I can't drink caffeine or lay on my left side when I'm anxious. Those two things make me notice them so much more. I have always had heart fears, but always check out fine. My best advice is to reassure yourself that all is well. You are young, healthy & have been checked by the dr. Keeping your mind & body occupied is the best revenge. Has anything changed in your life that precipitated the palps return? Sometimes lack of sleep or too much excitement can bring these things on. Good luck & keep in touch. Great to hear that you've been doing well. (((hugs))) jan

I use cold, wet face clothes, or paper towels if I am not home on my neck & face.
