Welcome to iVillage's Get Your Zzzs Community Challenge®. We're thrilled to have you join the thousands of other women who are committed to making healthy sleep (without sleeping pills) a priority in their lives.

What's it all about?
Record sales of coffee. Billions of dollars in sales and advertising of sleeping pills. Our modern world has become an alarming study in sleep deprivation. Whether it is cheating on sleep, disrupted sleep due to shift work or rotating work schedules, a reliance on sleeping pills, insomnia or other common sleep problems such as sleep apnea, the complaint of "I'm exhausted" has become one of the most common refrains in America today. But there is a way out of our sleep-deprived trap. Drawing on our combined 45 years of research and clinical experience in sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School and the healthy sleep solutions we offer at our Website Goodsleep.com, the Get Your Zzzs Community Challenge offers you scientifically proven nondrug solutions to sleep-deprivation. These six weeks will show you how to improve your energy, joy, optimism, ability to cope with stress and health through good sleep.

What to expect
Each weekday during the challenge, you'll have a short sleep assignment -- whether it's something to think about concerning your sleep or something you can do to improve your sleep.

These assignments will show you that you don't have to accept sleep deprivation as a fact of life. And along the way, we believe you will also discover that the key to taking control of your sleep, mind and body -- and changing your life in fundamental ways -- resides within you.

Some of the topics we'll be covering in the challenge include understanding and assessing your sleep, cognitive and behavioral techniques for insomnia, reducing your reliance on sleeping pills, stress-reduction techniques and lifestyle practices for sounder sleep, and techniques for managing jet lag, shift work, and improving sleep by minimizing your child's sleep problems.

Where to get help
Remember, this is a Community Challenge, so you don't have to go it alone! Here are some simple ways for you to get the most out of your community:

  • Talk to your coaches, Gregg Jacobs and Martin Moore-Ede, by posting your questions, frustrations or success stories on the message boards, where they will be checking in regularly.
  • While you're there, you can join your fellow challengers in the conversations that are happening every day and make use of our knowledgeable Get Your Zzzs message board community leader, Gayle, cl-gilloo, who's on hand to oversee your needs.
  • Get a friend to join the Challenge with you to keep each other motivated.
  • Share your plans with your family members. Let them know that you've embarked on a six-week challenge to improve your sleep; ask them to support your needs.

We sincerely hope you enjoy the sleep challenge. Good luck and good sleep!
