I grind my teeth as well at night & i think it has a lot to do with anxiety! lol

I have a mouthguard that I wear when it gets really bad, when I first got it I had to wear it all the time and it corrected it to some degree, so now when I wake up and my teeth hurt, the next few nights I wear a mouthguard and it seems to do the trick.

I know that you can just buy really cheap mouthguards that you can just heat up in hot water and then leave it so it will form to the shape of your teeth, that may do the trick just to stop the pressure from hurting you.

Just make sure that you put the mouthguard on the bottom teeth and not the top teeth because this is where you want the pressure to be elivated from.

Any questions just ask :)

I have the same problem, I've had it all my life. My brother has it as well. It's actually a sleeping disorder called Bruxism. Even though you can do it all day long as well! I went to a neurologist (my teeth were cracking) who found out I have 3 sleeping disorders total.
The only way to lessen it is to have less stress. I now only do it when really stressed out. Also, a mouth guard helps tremendously. My brother is worse than I am and sleeps with one every night, and he's in his 40's! I believe you can get those online or at a drugstore. I am shocked your dentist didn't mention one to you. I would think that's more his fault than yours not asking....
Good luck in finding some relief!

I have to agree with the others about the mouthguard. You can have one made @ the dentist's for a small fortune or pick one up

Hi SheriAnn!

I grind my teeth in my sleep. I have a dental device that I wear for sleep apnea that is made out of acrylic and has metal posts on the side. At my worst, I actually broke the metal bars off of it. I now have to wear orthodontic rubber bands with it to keep my jaw from grinding side to side.

They sell mouth guards that are pretty inexpensive that you boil in hot water and fit to conform your mouth. It's a lot cheaper than dental work!

Hi Everyone, if at all possible financially, I would suggest having a dentist fit the mouth for a mouthguard. It may not make a difference when you're young, but in the long run, there will be a difference as you age. If the gumline recedes, the dentist can make a mouthguard fitted specifically to the mouth to prevent additional problems. There are very good books on TMJ. I would suggest not chewing gum which can aggravate teeth grinding. Also, there are facial exercises that will relax the jaw. If there is any discomfort, check into using a heating pad to relax the area. I would also suggest reading some books about breathing properly, guided imagery, and meditation. HTH.
