Back from the p-doc's with prescriptions

Hey, all. I just got back from my p-doc from our discussion of adjusting my meds. I have a bad, bad history with SSRIs (Celexa, Zoloft, and Paxil all gave me bad side effects that wouldn't go away), so I will not take those. And of course, doctors tend to recommend SSRIs first. We had a frank discussion about various meds, and he said that even though he would recommend adding a SSRI on top of my Wellbutrin-XL, he would support me if I decided that isn't what I want. And I said I was just not willing to take another SSRI when 3 of them have been horrible for my body. We finally agreed to up my dose of Wellbutrin to 450 mg.

We have had others who used it for sleep with success, Laura. I hope it works well for you. Let us know. (((hugs))) jan
Here's a good link from our board:

Well, so far it's a mixed bag. My doctor said I could take 2 Trazadone pills (at 50 mg. each), so I did that and felt fine. NOT AT ALL SLEEPY. Ugh. I'll keep taking it, of course, and see if by taking it every night it will eventually make me sleepy. I have no idea of 100 mg. of Trazadone is a low dose or the normal starting dose, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was a low dose since I'm now up to 450 mg. of Wellbutrin-XL. I just want to feel better. I'm so tired of things not working. I'm starting to get scared that I'm one of those people who is unresponsive to treatment. I've been on over half a dozen antidepressants, and so far nothing has really helped. My therapist even commented a few weeks ago about it.
I found this on the web.
Desyrel (trazodone) Dosage and How to Take Desyrel (trazodone): The initial dose is 150mg a night, taken after dinner or "a light snack." But, really, start at just 50mg if you want to wake up the next morning. If you don't respond after one week, increase it to 100mg. Unlike most other SSRIs, people respond to Desyrel rather quickly, so you can work up to that 150mg dosage after two weeks, then wait a month before increasing the dosage. After that it's an increase of 50mg a day every four days or so, dividing the dosage, until you reach the maximum of 400mg a day.
Obviously you should check with your doctor to see if he wants you to up the dosage over time.

Adding new meds or adjusting dosages can make us anxious, Laura. I have had fears that the dr. would never find something that helped. That is dang scary. But, I remind myself that there are plenty of meds I haven't tried & they are developing new meds all the time.
I would check with the dr. as Dharma suggested if the trazadone doesn't help with your sleep. It's hard to feel good if you're sleep deprived. Keep in touch. (((hugs))) jan
Thanks. I'm going back to see him on Friday. He always likes to see patients 1 week after adjusting medication/adding new ones to see how it's going. I'll talk to him about it then.
I feel better today, but yesterday I had a horrible headache and nausea all day, and I felt achy. Like I was coming down with the flu. But both meds can cause those side effects, so I'm sure it's just the medicine. And I do feel some better today, so that's a good sign.

Thanks, Sheri Ann. I feel like I should be studied in a lab or something because it takes something really strong apparently to knock me out. Sometimes even the Ambien wouldn't always work and I'd be awake for hours.
Well, I felt some better on Tuesday but absolutely wretched yesterday. I had to stay home from work (all day). I was so nauseous and light headed I could hardly get out of bed and get to the phone to call in sick. I slept most of the day and ran a couple of vital errands late in the afternoon--thought I was going to faint. Not good. I'm at work today and feel awful still. Saw my *t* today. I told her what was going on. I could tell she was surprised the Trazodone wasn't having any effect on my insomnia. I'll let you guys know what the *p-doc* says tomorrow.
