Jennifer,

I wish there was something more helpful to offer, but I know how awful it is to deal with financial problems. You need to answer the summons, but maybe something helpful will come from it, like a reasonable payment plan. The good part is that you do get to tell your side of it and explain your present situation.

Your MIL sounds like a pain, but you seem very self assured in dealing with her. The whole issue with her & the phone calls is certainly not anything you need to feel guilty about. I'd be really tempted to write her a note (one that you sleep on and reread before sending it), nicely explaining your point of view. It may not change her behavior, but at least the communication will be clear.

Hugs,
Dee

I know that financial matters can be such a trigger for us. Especially @ this time, Jennifer, when you are trying to manage on your own. Take it a day @ a time. From what I understand, even if you had a judgement made against you, payment plans are usually an option. I don't know the laws, but if this debt was accrued prior to your marriage, your dh's income might not be an issue. Have you considered legal help? Here are the finance boards on iVillage. They have money experts over there who can answer your questions. Use a playname if you want to remain anonymous. For goodness sake's! Don't be ashamed to ask! You need the help, gf.

As for your mil, Dee, gave you some good advice. You don't need this additional stress while dh is gone. Be honest & forthright. Noone needs a nebby nose breathing down their back.

Although you have coped well, it is no shame to take meds. It has happened to all of us. You will get your balance back. Think positively & give yourself a break. We can be our own worst enemies by expecting more from ourselves than is humanly possible. As for this politic thing, in another couple weeks it will be all over but the shootin.'
