How do you start over with a new *T*?

Since I plan to stop seeing the person I'm currently seeing, I'm wondering how do you even start over with someone else? It's really mind boggling for me to imagine going in and starting over at the beginning with a new person and telling them about myself. Is it hard? How much (if anything) should you tell the new therapist about your past therapy?

Most assuredly, you will have to tell about *you* from the beginning or as much as the new *T* requires. As for what transpired between you & your old *T*, I don't think you'll be asked or should be asked, Laura. I have had many *T's* through the years because our area is so rural & providers change frequently. Noone EVER asked what I discussed or revealed to a former *T.* I think it's best for them to start fresh & not have any pre-conceived notions. KWIM? (((hugs))) jan

I just started over with a new therapist. I didn't have to tell her much since I am seeing her for anxiety, which is a new thing for me. I had seen a therapist for post partum depression before, which I did share with my new therapist.

I did tell my new therapist that I wasn't going back to my old therapist because we had some issues with insurance/billing, and I felt (well, knew) that my old therapist was behaving unethically. It really broke my trust in her and I felt that we could not salvage the relationship.

My new therapist did ask me what did work and didn't work with my old therapist.

I really was not looking forward to starting over with someone new, but it's worked out well so far. It's kind of nice to have a clean slate and not rehash old issues too.
