Palps again?

I didn't realize that it would be a problem again, but when my son woke up at 11:00 pm lastnight, I realized I was having palpitations again. Then this morning I woke up with a nightmare of a headache, and have felt some palps throughout the day but nothing too bad. I was hoping this would be better, but my doc said to call him if things aren't going well. Things have been alright for the most part, yesterday was just a bad day in particular. He said that if the ativan didn't help enough, that he would prescribe me some kind of daily pill, maybe lexapro. I have a fear of antidepressants, and I'm not actually depressed, really... My medication options are also limited because I'm still breastfeeding my son. Just kinda wanted to rant, any thoughts from anyone are appreciated.

I am sorry to hear this. Are you seeing your OB/GYN about this, or another doc? Just wondering, is it related to postpartum depression or did you experience this before your son was born? You may not feel you are 'depressed' - I really didn't when my recent anxiety hit, but the two seem to go hand in hand.

I was on Prozac when I was nursing my twins - a relatively low dose of 10 mg a day. I had PPD and needed the meds to function. I only nursed them for 2 months (vs. 9 months with my first child). You could talk to your son's pediatrician about how the meds might affect him. Also, you may want to weigh the pros and cons of nursing vs. your health and your ability to function. I know I felt a lot of pressure to nurse my kids, but honestly at some point you have to factor in your own health and well being, and the demands of your life. I was bottle fed and I turned out okay. Well, maybe that's not such a good example... LOL

Lack of sleep contributes to my palps. Is there any chance you can take something for the headache & squeeze in a nap? If not, try belly breathing, listening to a relaxing CD(I am into the chanting monks)

Sometimes after the birth of a baby, your thyroid can get a little hyperactive. Mine did and it not only caused palps and anxiety but also evenually led to weight loss and sleepless nights. Anyways, has your dr. checked your thyroid functions. You may want him to. In this case, the problem can be cleared up once your thyroid is working normal again.

I don't know much about palpitations, just wanted to send thoughts and prayers. I hope your doctor can help.

Hugs,
Dee

I can't tell if it would really be classified as depression. Usually I feel okay, lately I've been kinda insane. When I feel depressed it is usually due to loneliness, I feel incredibly isolated from my friends, and because I'm stuck working a retail job when I have a college degree, and I'm living in my b/fs parents house. I'm going to my family doctor. I love to nurse my son, I just wish that my options for medication were a little more broad, because I don't want to eat too much of the ativan and make my breastmilk toxic, but he said as long as I cut down on nursing, it would be fine... oh, I'm confused.

I know you're not a doctor, but realizing my problems and my symptoms would you think it a good idea to ask about antidepressants?

My doctor and I discussed it briefly, but he didn't think it was a thyroid problem. He did, however say to call back in a couple weeks if things didn't clear up. I plan on calling him soon if this keeps up. I can't afford the blood work right now, I'm waiting for my insurance from my job to kick in.

I feel kinda dorky calling my doctor again, because I just called him the other day about a rash that my son has. (Its infant eczema..) It may be some kind of post partum thing.. I don't know. I will call him as soon as my insurance kicks in from my job, I guess...

Yes, I would. From personal experience, anxiety & depression go hand in hand for many folks. Antidepressants work for both illnesses. Your dr. will prescribe what he considers the best drug in your situation. Ativan is used for short term, immediate anxiety. The antidepressants work differently & over an extended period. I am not suggesting you must take them forever. In fact, if this IS a post partum thing, you probably won't have to take them for years. Don't focus on the future. Focus on the here & now. You want the best life you deserve for you & your baby.

Remember, on a plane the flight crew will tell you to put on your oxygen mask first, then put on your babies. You cannot help him, unless you put yourself first. This is one time when you MUST be selfish & noone can fault you for that. Good luck & GBU! (((hugs))) jan
