I'm having such a hard time with my anxiety I started drinking. Now I have two problems to work on. I feel terrible. Has anyone gone this route with their anxiety?

Thanks for any advice and comments.

I am so sorry to hear that. I'm sure you know that it's only compounding the problem. Are you taking meds too? Have you seen a doctor? I would suggest you get in to see a Psyhiatrist and/or a therapist as soon as you can about how to deal with your anxiety.

I have no health insurance but I have been to a number of psychiatrists. The meds didn't work for me or the side effects were too severe. I just cant afford to go to anymore doctors...or the price of meds. I just dont know what to do.

What about a church/synogogue/mosque? Are you religious at all? Church is the cheapest therapy I know of. Ministers are trained to deal with exactly these type of life crises.

Lots of people have gone this route, Jessica. Folks with anxiety disorders have a high incidence of addictions & suicide. That being said, you are a savvy lady & don't need a lecture from anyone on whether this route is good for you or not. I will say that alcohol is a depressant & though it may temporarily make you feel less anxious, in the end it will cause you to become more depressed than ever. Then you will have 3 problems.

Here's a link to low cost therapy: http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-bhpanic&msg=18092.1&ctx=4096

There are many alternative therapies out there that are not too expensive. You might try reading self help books or teach yourself from our *coping tips & tricks* folder below. Meds are available @ low or no cost from every drug company that produces them. I contacted Pfizer directly & my dd is getting her meds free. Our family dr. agreed to dispense them. As for side effects, all meds effect each of us differently. Why not give it another shot? You may find a med that helps & has little or no side effects.

We want you to stay safe. We want you to be around for you & your loved ones for a very long time. You CAN learn to live better with anxiety. Good luck & GBU! (((hugs))) jan

You could look into AA?

I don't drink much...I have enjoyed an occasional beer, but I actually noticed after my anxiety disorder developed that even one drink greatly increases my anxiety and I get super irritable. So I've actually cut back my casual drinking.

There is help out there for both problems. If I think of other resources, I'll let you know. I think the churchs, peer groups would be helpful for you.

Hugs,
Dee

I'm sorry to hear you've chosen this route, but happy you are asking for guidance.
