Its back

Hi;

I haven't written on this board before but I sure could use some help. I've had an anxiety disorder for over 12 years and had it under very good control until two months ago. I was rushed to the hospital for acute pancreatitis and since recovering from that have developed a thyroid problem and borderline diabetes (both of which the doc thinks will heal and go away in a few months). I'm terrified of medical problems so this was tough for me.

The problem is my anxiety level is spiking again. I'm on Xanax which always has worked best for me but I have this desperate feeling again, which I remember well. I have panic attacks basically every Monday morning when I go to work, which was a classic problem for me. Has a recurrence of this severity happened to any of you before? Did it pass again and go back to 'normalcy' (meaning that your able to handle it again more easily).

Help.

Mary

Hi, Mary! It's great to see you in our caring community;) You are NOT alone. Illness is a big trigger for many of us.

Please check out the "coping tips & tricks" folder below for ways you can teach yourself to relax when the panic strikes. I have found the belly breathing & daily meditation the best for my panic attacks. Spells of anxiety are common. Generally as you move forward & put the physical illness behind you, balance will be restored. What ways did you cope with the anxiety/panic in the past? Those skills are still there & can help get you *righted.* You might consider seeing a therapist. It doesn't mean you're crazy or that you will need to do this forever. For now, you probably would find someone who was objective & non-judgemental as a perfect sounding board for your fear & anxiety.

I am a diabetic. It's been awhile but I was diagnosed in '91. It was scary. I went to classes held @ the local hospital to get as much info as I could. Even though I'm a nurse, it's alot different when it happens to you. Also, I saw a dietician to help me figure out my meal plan. It was not easy giving myself insulin, but I had to face the fear & learn how to cope. It is possible. When we're anxious, it seems to be reassuring to have the best resources @ our fingertips.

Drop into chat when you can on Tues. & Thurs. evenings. We'll save you a seat. Our members are good @ listening & sharing their support. Don't be a stranger. We care & want you to regain your life. You CAN do it! (((hugs))) jan

Thanks so much for the info. I can't seem to find your 'tips and tricks' folder so if you could guide me to it somehow I'd be grateful.

Its after lunch on Monday now and the anxiety and panic finally subsided. There is definitely something about me and Monday morning that amplifies it all. I've been hypoglycemic for 17 years just on the brink of diabetes so I'm pretty good with the diet change but its nice to know there is someone else out there that sees links between these things. I was in therapy for 7 years and I haven't decided yet if I need to go back yet. Having someone like that to talk to when I really didn't understand it all or what to do for it was the best thing I ever did. But I think you are right and I need to look up all my old coping skills and try and implement them all again.

I've been reading through old messages on this board and that really helps.

What coping skills do you use to try and turn it off? I'm so out of practice!

I can't tell you how much better your message made me feel. Just to know this isn't abnormal, to regress like this. Also, I am so paranoid about even taking .75mg of xanax at a time, its good to hear from others that take higher doses when needed. I think while I'm going through this if I need the meds more I just have to take them. I was raised to think pills are very bad, needless to say, so that's something I need to overcome again too.

Thanks!
