Hi Ladies,
I thought I would ask you all for your opinion here. I posted here a few weeks ago because I started having panic attacks and after discussing it with my gyno and a psychiatrist it’s possible I’m at the beginning of peri-menopause. I’m on meds now for the anxiety and they’ve really helped a lot.
Last month when I got my period it wasn’t bad. My mood was almost okay. This weekend though and today it was a different story. I feel a heaviness, a sadness almost. I only spotted, not really into the full period yet but it's here. I called my psychiatrist to see if he thinks this is just a side effect of the whole hormonal thing but I haven’t heard from him yet. He’s good about calling me back so I know he’ll give me a call today.
Anyway, I guess what I’m wondering is it normal for our/your monthly cycles to swing so much from okay to downright borderline depressing? I’m hoping that it passes more tomorrow. My big problem is my imagination takes over and I wonder too much about why I’m feeling this way. I see the TV ads for those depression medications and then I start to wonder about myself. Then I see the news (actually I’ve stopped watching it) and I wonder about what made someone kill their kids, etc. It’s maddening some days. Other days I’m just fine.
It sucks! Can’t someone invent a happy pill with no side effects?
Bennie

"Can’t someone invent a happy pill with no side effects?" If you find one, Bennie, please get me a prescription. LOL
I know that hormones can trigger our anxiety. Lots of folks have posted about it. Personally, I have excessive anxiety & even a panic attack about a week before my period starts. I have never had huge mood swings with my cycle. I am NOT an expert, so if this is a dumb question, just ignore me. Is there something that can be taken for peri-menopause to even out the emotional aspects? Does eating soy help? I have read that it helps with decreasing estrogen levels. Also, my gf is a nurse practitioner & she takes an herb called evening primrose oil. Just remember that even herbs have side effects & may not agree with your regular meds.
I an sending P&PT's your way. I hope someone has some good info on this & will share it with us. GL! (((hugs))) jan

Hi Bennie,
Hormones sure seen to make my anxiety worse. I'd have one "bad" day before of PMS crankiness even before I developed generalized anxiety...now whew! I can go nuclear & have some major meltdowns that time of the month.
Just two weeks ago, I was having a really no good, very bad day anyway (took DH to the ER). Well after this overwhelming experience of anxiety and rage, I got home exhausted and guess what started! Nothing like hormones to fuel my emotions to a peak.
If you find those pills, send 'em my way!
Smiles,
Dee
Thanks for sharing with me. It helps to know we're not alone in this struggle to simply be content and happy with life. I'm going to have to more closely monitor my monthly cycle and be more prepared next month and going forward.
Hang in there,
Bennie

Thanks for agreeing about the hormonal thing. My psychiatrist called me back last night and also felt it is/was hormonal. It comes in waves so I'm hoping that as my period leaves me I'm back to my 'happier' self of last week. It helps to know we're not alone in this struggle to simply be content and happy with life. I'm going to have to more closely monitor my monthly cycle and be more prepared next month and going forward.
Hang in there,

Thanks for sharing with me. I used to take Oil of Evening Primrose some years ago and I felt it helped me beat the PMS blues but I won't take it again without the okay of my psychiatrist. He didn't want me to take any extra vitamins, etc., for a few weeks until I was on my new meds so something like the primrose oil is out if you ask me.

I did an iVillage search & there are lots of links to perimenopause. There's message boards, too. Here's a link that answered alot of my questions. Just sharing for all our members: http://magazines.ivillage.com/goodhousekeeping/hb/health/articles/0,,284595_445115,00.html
Please let us know how things go, Bennie. Any suggestions from your dr. or anyone that would help those with the mood swings would be great! Hoping to see you soon. (((hugs))) jan
