Finding a therapist

I think I may need to find a therapist again. My old one retired many years ago. What type of docs do you see (psychologist, MSW/LCSW)? And how did you find them?

I see an LCSW, and love him!

I am a nontraditional college student and am seeing a psychologist employed by my school. I went to a Depression Screening on campus and was diagnosed GAD. Which made a lot of sense since I'd been having so much stress and anxiety.

I like her a lot, though she is younger than me and fairly new as a psychologist. She's just out of school and still working on some sort of mandatory supervised # of counseling hours for her license.

(Of course the price is right, free! LOL)

Smiles,

Thanks, the suggestions helped. I cold called an MSW/LCSW today that I pulled from my insurance doctor list. Hate to do that but you have to be able to pay for this stuff and I don't know anyone that could recommend someone to me. I was impressed that she not only answered her own phone and spent time talking to me but she squeezed me in to her appointment list tomorrow night. She also bothered to tell me she has a lot of experience working with anxiety and panic disorders including in families of 9/11 survivors. Sounded quite nice so I'm hoping I've gotten lucky with my choice. The first two I called didn't even have their names on their answering machines - just an electronic 'leave a message' voice. Amazing that ANYONE would bother leaving a message at all.

I also have an appointment with my doc to talk about meds on Friday. Hopefully I'm on the right path.

I just found this website. Don't know if it will be helpful to you, but maybe others ISO a therapist.

It went okay. I'm not seeing her now though. The day after I did the docs decided I was hyperthyroid and that was my problem. Now they've done more tests and decided I'm not and that its my anxiety after all. I just started on Lexapro a few days ago along with my usual xanax. Plus they have me on betablockers because of my heart racing so much. If this doesn't help me calm down I'm not sure what I'll do. This is one major relapse I'm having but I don't feel yet like talking to a therapist again is going to help me much since I went through 7 years of therapy already. I'm just trying to take it a day at a time right now.

How long does it take the meds to really work? I've noticed a slight improvement the last few days but this morning, Monday - my worst day, was still pretty bad. JITTERY!

Thanks for the support!

Hi, Mary! Sorry about the jittery feeling. That feeling usually passes in a week or so when starting a new med. We have lots of lexapro users that can share their thoughts. Just wanted you to know that optimal effect for antidepressants used for anxiety, take 4 to 6 weeks. But, you should notice a difference in a couple of weeks. Please take care. Don't be a stranger;) (((hugs))) jan

I've been on Lexapro for almost 2 months now. It took at least 2-3 weeks for me to stop feeling jittery and buzzed. It was pretty bad, but I gutted it out and I'm glad I did. I feel much better now. Some of the side effects hung on longer (like a daily afternoon headache, yuk) but they are all gone now.
