Hi Roslyn,
A Psychiatrist has a medical degree and can prescribe meds. They are essentially specialty doctors and focus on the physical basis for a problem. Visits are usually short and pointed towards finding the right med or dosage needed.
A Psychologist has a Ph.D and is usually licensed to practice clinical therapy (sometimes called "talk" therapies). Treatment is often a series of visits where the patient and therapist discuss a whole variety of life factors that contribute to a person's psychological condition.
There are a lot of specialities and different theories in psychology, so a psychologist may specialize in one area or practice therapy based on a combination of theories. Two of the most common types of pyschology, often combined, are cognitive and behavioral therapies, addressing negative thoughts or ways of thinking and conditioned behavior.(ingrained responses or bad habits)
There are all different types of counselors with a variety of levels or areas of psychological education. Most common are those in some type of social service. They can offer counseling, which is more basic, like advice or help with basic life skills or advice about life problems, but do not offer therapy or treatment for those with psychological conditions.
I hope this helps.
Smiles,
Dee
Psychotherapy is a process where someone seeks help for problems of an emotional nature from a trained professional. By establishing a positive, trusting relationship, the professional will try to help the individual cope with the problem, mature and grow, and learn about himself or herself.
