Question about Xanax

I've posted before about going on and then off meds, I think the last one I did was Lexapro which was severely toxic to my system, giving me horrible hives and basically making me feel much much worse than before I started. I asked my dr about Xanax before, because I feel as thought I'm the kind of person who only needs meds when I have anxiety. I don't have anxiety 24/7. She said no, but Im thinking of asking again. What exactly does Xanax do, are there any side effects, and do you just take it when needed?

Thanks!
Cheryl

I have taken Xanax - it's a benzodiazepine (tranquilizer). I took it with Lexapro for a while because it helped me sleep. Now I take a different tranquilizer called Klonopin which lasts longer than Xanax and it is not as addictive.

Did your doctor give you a reason for not wanting you on Xanax? It's often used to treat anxiety. I know some doctors don't like to prescribe it because it is highly addictive.

Many doctors have a hard time prescribing xanax.
