ok, i just realized that i have social anxiety. I've actually had it since i can remember but i've always just assumed i was very shy, but now i know that sitting in my car at target and not being able to get out of the car beacuse i don't want to be seen or looked at is not normal shyness, and that's just one situation. the thing is i want to get proffessional help but i'm not health insured and i don't make alot of money, what should i do? i feel like it inhibits my life, there are many things i'd like to do but i am so scared of people. i thing social anxiety is also giving me depression! ahhh!!

Hi Fairy1017,
I am back in school as a nontraditional student and suffered both depression & anxiety that went undiagnosed for a number of years. I have also been uninsured. In my psychology class at school this past year, I recognized manay of my anxiety symptoms and started looking for some kind of reduced cost clinic or support group. Maybe something like that could help you? A reduced or free clinic, maybe a church related counselor or group?
Fortunately for me, my college did a free depression & anxiety screen earlier last fall. I tested very high for generalized anxiety, was diagnosed and offered counseling through my school. I have been in talk therapy for several months and it has been a great help for me.
There are good stress reducing & coping tips available here on the board, better diet, exercise and stress management are all great for helping depression & anxiety, however you really should keep looking for some way to get professional help. Believe me it is worth it! Meds are also necessary for many people to feel better and only a doctor can prescribe those.
Hope to see you around, this is a great goup and very supportive.:)
Smiles,
Dee
Hi! It's nice to see you;) You are NOT alone. Many folks who post to this board have social anxiety or some symptoms of it. It is good that you have recognized it & are making plans to change how it affects your life. Here's Health & Well Being's psychiatrist talking about social anxiety: http://gailsaltz.ivillage.com/health/2006/12/dealing_with_shyness.html
