Yesterday I had a meeting at my daughter's school about her speech. After the meeting my oldest son's teacher, the asst. principal, and the principal come into the room and tell me that my son is having alot of problems getting his work turned in on time, not completing it, yadda, yadda, yadda. The teacher said that my son was making excuses like he couldn't finish his homework because he had to "cook for the other children". I do have my kids make small things, like sandwiches or soup or spaghettios, or something like that. My oldest is 9 and knows how to do these things. I explained that I had been recovering from surgery and my son was helping. So I get home, and a bit later I see an official state car pull up in the driveway. I'm thinking it's someone from the health dept. because we have some junk at the side of our garage and I figured the neighbors were complaining or whatever. It was a SOCIAL SERVICES worker! She came in and told me that there had been a report filed about my oldest son and it was because he came to school without socks on, and it said that he came to school with "mildewed and smelly clothes and no socks". It also had in there that his backpack was in ripped in terrible shape and that he had to cook for the other kids. It also had in there, that "according to the newspaper, that this family is in danger of losing their home". My son always has clean clothes to wear to school. I ask him every day if he has socks and he says yes and runs out the door for school. His backpack was a bit tattered, but we were getting him another one. As far as his smelly clothes, it's probably his SHOES they are smelling cuz he always seems to get them wet. This crap just ticks me off and doesn't constitute building a case against me.

I was a bit heated because THAT is no one's buisness but our own. We were in preforclosure, but my husband is taking care of that. The social worker was really nice and even told me that she didn't know why she was there, that all the things in the report didn't even meet their criteria for a case. She told me that some of these schools discriminate because people have large families and that's not mainstream.

I'm sure it's my son's teacher who reported this, I will be having a few words with her today.

I hope that whoever reported was doing it with the intention to help, but definitely sounds like an over reaction, especially since they just talked with you yesterday. I would definitely be asking for another meeting with teacher, principal and vice principal to set things straight.

I know you're really upset and I'd be too about someone going so far as to report, but maybe now you are more aware of how things at home are affecting your DS. When the whole family is going through a lot, sometimes it's not so clear how individuals are coping.

I'm sorry you have been going through such a hard time.

Hugs,

I talked again with the principal, the teacher was too "busy" to talk to me. She admitted that things were not handled in the right way and assured me that any concerns in the future will be handled directly. The whole phone problem was theirs too, their line isn't working right.

No matter what, I take good care of my kids, there is no neglect going on in my home. I think teachers tend to overreact alot.

With all that's in the news, Amy & the focus on high profile cases that were incorrectly handled by child protective services, it's a wonder we don't hear more

You have to remember too, that there IS a lot of child neglect, children left unattended & children not being cared for properly.
