Heart Palpitations Anyone?
| Thu, 02-08-2007 - 9:21pm |
Hi Everyone,
Anyone else have heart palpitations? The scare the pants off me every time. I HATE them. I have been to a doctor and "know" there is nothing to worry about. That does not help me when I am having them, though. It can be instant anxiety for me.
Thanks!
:)

Heart palpitations have been discussed frequently on the board. The advanced search isn't working, but here's a link:
They are not fun!!
Hey from another Laura.
Several years ago, I started experiencing heart palpitations and felt like my heart was fluttering and skipping beats. My mother has a heart condition that was diagnosed when she was in her mid 20s, so we were very concerned that I had developed the same thing. I actually ended up driving myself to the emergency room one night because it was so bad. They hooked me up to a monitor and plain as day, you could see the irregular beats. They gave me a beta blocker and sent me home. That stuff made me feel so sick--so lethargic, like I was weighted down. But the palpitations stopped. The next day I called my regular doctor and went in that afternoon. She referred me to a cardiologist and they did an ECG (I think is what it's called!).
The results were normal. Nobody could figure it out. At no point did anyone suggest the palpitations could be symptoms of anxiety. They knew I wasn't faking because you could see the irregular beats on a monitor. But they didn't find any heart damage or abnormalities. I was terrified I'd have to be on medication for the rest of my life like my mother.
Eventually the palpitations went away. Fast forward to last year when I saw a doctor for anxiety. I told him what had happened, and he said he thought it was symptoms of anxiety since nothing was found to be physically wrong with my heart.
Anyway, I *know* how incredibly scary it is to experience palpitations. I remember becoming very aware of every heartbeat and feeling like I was going to crawl out of my skin with every palpitation. I know you've said you've seen your doctor. Could you get a beta blocker? They even out your heartrate so you don't experience palpitations.

Laura-
YES! This is a primary source of my anxiety. I can hardly work out due to palpitations. I have been told they are PVCs- premature ventricular contractions, and that they are harmless. But still they scare me very much. It seems I have them on a near daily basis...

Hi, Julie! Welcome! I am sorry to hear about the palps. As you become less anxious, they will not bother you as much. When I don't get enough sleep, I am very aware of them. Last night, I could feel my pulse in my ears & neck area. It was scary. I belly breathed until I was able to get involved in a good movie, then went to bed early!
Post anytime. We are very happy to see you replying to posts & offering your thoughts. It is much appreciated. GL&GBU! (((hugs))) jan
I have palpitations and I am never quite sure what it is.
I have tachycardia-and take medication for that. I notice the fluttering and skipping when I am on the couch. The anti anxiety medication seems to take it away so I hope its just anxiety.
I wonder if other people get the palpitations out of the blue too?

Here ya go, Annie. HTH:) jan
