Hey everyone:

So as the people in the chat know, I started the Zoloft last night. I only took half of a 25 mg pill around 8:30pm and felt fine...until about 5:30am this morning, when I started having nausea, dry heaves and diarrhea. I almost called out of work, but after 4 runs to the bathroom, pepto, immodium and some tea and toast, I came in around 11am. I am a little scared b/c this was my body's reaction to only half a pill! I am now afraid to go up tonight or tomorrow to the real dose and am already freaking out, wanting to call it quits. Is it normal to feel THIS SICK the first day? How long will this last?

Hello. I was having bad anxiety with daily nausea for a couple months and finally decided to try Zoloft as the doc told me to. I took it for the first time at 25mg around Noon I think it was. I did this for 7 days. I never got sick but did feel queasy in the belly.
I had vivid dreams too but always felt rested when I woke up. After that I went to 50mg for 14 days. I recall feeling more centered and grounded, like I could think clearer. No more queasiness.

I would not give up on it yet. It may not have been the Zoloft that caused that. You could have picked up a stomach bug or ate something that your stomach did not like and maybe combined with the new med, you got sick. I'd give it another try tonight. I know, it sure seems like it was the med, but I'd try again. Stay at 25mg though. I have heard from multiple people that you need to do 25mg for a week before increasing. I am not a doc of course but I cannot see why it would hurt to stay at 25mg until you feel the med is not the cause of the illness.

Hey Talula...I would def talk to your doc about this....I had a problem with Zoloft and those were some of my symptoms and I was told I was hypersensitive to it and to stop taking it...I have not been able to tolerate any of them not even Lexapro, which most people can tolerate and you might want to ask your doctor about that one....I will tell you one way to tell if you are allergic to them that is a sure sign to stop taking it...if you get a symptom of burning, all over your skin and body almost like your flesh is burning from the inside out DO NOT take it anymore...I am not trying to scare you or anything but you will def notice this feeling if you get it...its weird and scary and I just want you to be aware...but consider asking your doctor about the Lexapro alot of people can tolerate that and the dosage is only 10mg...i couldnt handle it but you might be able to! i hope this helped a little, but def call your doctor and if they give you the runaround, find a diff doc...you know what is best for your body...good luck and I hope everything goes better!! keep me posted

I am sorry to hear about how you're feeling. It's great that you pushed through your stomach upset & still went to work. YAY!

IMHO, this very small dose of zoloft & the first time taking it probably is anxiety, not side effects. To be sure, always call your dr. or pharmacist. We have had alot of boardies who reported these feelings in the morning, no matter what med they were on & even NO meds. Anxiety can manifest itself as a stomach bug. You were anxious about starting the zoloft. Some folks have suggested sips of gatorade or saltines before getting out of bed. Others have taken their anti-anxiety med(xanax, klonopin, ativan, etc.) before getting up. Others have listened to a relaxation CD or music before arising. If these are really side effects to the zoloft, they should decrease as your body gets adjusted.

I hope you feel better soon & stick with the med. Let us know what you decide. GL! (((hugs))) jan

The pill is so tiny, it'd be difficult to only take a quarter of it. I called my doc and spoke to a nurse. She said maybe I have a stomach bug or it is nerves, but I don't and I was sleeping, so I say no to both of those. :) Not to mention, when I tried Zoloft back a few months ago and only gave it a few days, I had the same thing. Not so much the nausea, but definitely the headache and stomachache. Good to hear you had the same thing on lexapro, Sherri. I may just need time. She said to give it the weekend, even if I stay on half a pill and see if it continues and check back in with them next week. She said if after a week or so it's still bad, we may want to ask the doc about trying something else.

dont worry. you are doing great and also you have to keep in mind that not every med your dr prescribes you is the right one. people react to different meds differently. zoloft didnt do anything to me except make me feel worse then i tryed lexapro and now i have stuck to prozac. i have been on it almost 3 months, but you also have to keep in mind all of these meds have side effects and take 6-8 weeks or longer to start working. if the side effects keep bothering you though i would call your dr and see if maybe you should be put on something else.
