Hi, I am new to this board, and in need of some help. I am 29 years old. I've always had anxiety on and off. Recently though, it's gotten worse and practicaly everyday. So I went to see the family doctor today. He wants me to go get blood work tomm. to make sure I don't have an over active thyroid. In the mean time, he gave me zanex (I know that is spelled wrong) to take when I get attacks. Well the going to give blood thing has me completely freaked out and almost in an attack as is. But here is my real dilema....a couple of years ago I was taking a new medicine I never took before. I got so worked up, that I thought I was having an allergic reaction to the medication, when in actuallity I was having a panic attack. So ever since then, I won't take medicine I've never taken before. Weird I know. So has anyone out there ever taken zanex? I'm affraid of how it will make me feel. I don't want to not feel like myself. If I take it tomm. before I go to give blood will I still be as terrified and freaked out as I am right now?? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

welcome30.gifHi, Daisy! Welcome to our caring community. You are NOT alone. I bet @ least half of us who post here are scared to take new meds & worry that we'll have an awful reaction. I can assure you that xanax is safe if taken as directed. It will relax you for that blood test tomorrow. Can you take someone along just for courage? It's ok to say you are nervous & need a little help. Please give it a chance. It's very important that you find out if it's your thyroid acting up & not just anxiety.

Take a look below @ our *coping tips & tricks* folder. There are some excellent techniques you can teach yourself to relax & get through your test tomorrow. Remind yourself, that blood tests are safe. That noone has ever died from having blood drawn. *IF* you should be scared, tell the technician & they will give you a pep talk. Also, *IF* you feel weak or dizzy, just lay your head in your lap. I have had to do that in the past.

Have you considered talking with a counselor? I have found that a counselor/therapist can point out what is the basis of

Thyroid testing is standard for pa symptoms, as they mimic thyroid problems.

Well like I think I said earlier (not sure if I did or not), the dr. has me on such a low dosage, that in my time of need this morning, one didn't work. I took the 2nd one about an hour later. I guess it calmed me down, but I was still "gasping for air here and there". It didn't make me tired though, I'm glad about that. Do you take your Xanex on a regular basis, or just when you feel an attack coming on??

I was originally prescribed it every 6 hours, around the clock, I took it that way for many, many months, I think over a year, actually!

Well my blood test came back okay. So the doctor prescribed the Buspar. I didn't pick it up yet, I'm thinking I will wait until the weekend to start taking it, just because I'm not sure how I will feel on it. Anybody else ever take this?

I have friends that have taken it with NO side effects.
