Celexa Vs. Lexapro

Hey everyone:
So since the Zoloft didn't work out for me, my doctor suggested Lexapro. I was excited about this b/c a lot of people say it works well. I asked for the smallest dose so I could work up. He gave me the 5mg and said we'd take it from there. However, when I picked it up, it cost $40! My doc called and said he got a letter from my insurance saying it isn't a preferred med, so he would rather have me try Celexa. I don't know if this is for my benefit or theirs - but since I know they are similar, can someone tell me how they are different? Also, what would be a typical low dose of Celexa? I really wanted a med that I could take a small dose, since my body reacted so strongly to only 12.5 mg of zoloft.
thanks

Hi! I have never taken either of these meds, but they are used by members of our community with success. Hopefully someone will be along with first hand info.
From the literature & what medical professionals say, these meds are very similiar & are considered cousins. Just wanted you to know that both of these drugs are discussed frequently on the Anidepressant Medications board where my co-cl Sheri Ann hangs out;) Here's the link: http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/listsf.asp?webtag=iv-bhpaxil&nav=start
I tried Celexa for a few days--it made me very hungry so my doc took me off of it b/c the other meds I tried made me gain weight. My M was on it for dep. & it seemed to work well. May I ask what problem you had on Zoloft? I was on it years ago & although it made me fat, it worked well.
