I took a Fibromyaglia/Arthritis water class for about two years. It helped my fibro immensely, but it seemed to make my neck worse. It was hard to always be in water neck deep, because everyone wants that. Be sure the water is 90 degrees and go at your own pace. I would recommend that everyone give it a try. The water class helps strengthen your muscles and loosens up the joints, but does not help your bones, as in preventing osteoporosis. The doctor tells me to walk, walk, walk for that!!

PS I forgot this! I joined a gym with a warm water pool.

When I started looking for a water exercise program, the problem I had was that all the sessions were during working hours. I guess they figured that if you were "old" enough to have arthritis, you were no longer working. I ended up at a place called "Next." It is the "next" step down from physical therapy. It is run by physical therapists instead of trainers, and the equipment they use is that used in physical therapy, not gyms. They have a therapy pool (a water treadmill kind of setup) and they design a water program for you individually, as well as all the other exercises. They review the program every six weeks and make any necessary changes as they say your body becomes used to a certain routine after six weeks, and it is then not as effective. They know all about RA -- no need to educate them. And, the big surprise, it is not anymore expensive than any other gym membership, and less expensive than some. I've been with them about four years, and it has been money very well spent. Using what they have taught me, I even make use of hotel fitness facilities when I travel. I am positive that I would not have retained the strength and flexibility I have without the program. When I started, Denver was one of their test cities, and I don't know if they have expanded or not. I'll try to remember to ask.

Yes, Bev, I am totally amazed that you have been able to start a walking program with all you went through with those tootsies of yours.

Molly,

Thanks for the information. I would love to take this class, but unforturnately all the YMCAs in my area only offer them during workday. No evening or weekend classes. I would be happy just to take one class a week, if it helped even slightly. Oh well,

Molly,

So far no one has gotten back to me. I will probably call again next week and see if I get an answer.

I have been feeling pretty good. I will post an update thread next. Thanks for asking.
