Well, I went to therapy and I asked about the feeling of detachment. Some of you on the board hit the nail on the head: Dissociative behavior. My therapist told me about the defense mechanism and how it shows itself in children. I was amazed because what she said was exactly what I did as a child to "zone out" and I do it now as an adult when I feel overwhelmed or traumatized. Now I can begin to work thru the feeling a little better.
