is it an allergy?

I get this really gross taste in my mouth frequently. I cannot explain it, but it tastes like copper, in a way. I think its nasal drainage, but am not sure. Hubbys says it is. Whatever it is, it affects my sense of taste & smell in most foods :( and sometimes upsets my stomach. And, it stays with me all day and sometimes into the next day. No matter how much I can cough the stuff up, it does not go away.

I have been to both my primary doctor and a specialist & they both said nothing was wrong.

Does anyone know what this is, and what can I take for it?

Thanks,

Kim

Hi Kim,

I'm guessing if what you have is what I also go through, it's probably sinus drainage. Periodically, I get a yucky taste in my mouth and it can last for days and sometimes longer than a week. It's been that way for me lately. I did ask my doctor about it previously and she said it was sinus drainage. I take allergy meds as needed but that doesn't always trigger it. It just seems to appear.

If you have concerns, it's also good to check with your doctor.

Hi Calley,

Do they allergy meds stop the drainage & makes that taste go away? I was thinking of buying some Claritin or an over the counter nasal spray to see if that will help. I am thinking that what's causing it right now for me, is the weather change, but cant be for sure.

Hey Kim,

Sounds like post nasal drip, but your dr should be able to diagnose that right away by looking at the back of your throat. I have it all the time, but never noticed any funny taste before. I do, however, get a funny taste in my mouth and throat when I have a mild allergic reaction to a food allergy. I would suggest an appt with an allergist. If it's PND, they'll probably recommend testing and/or antihistamines. If it's a food allergy, it could possibly cause a severe reaction in the future. Let us know how you make out.

I went to the doctor the other day because of a sore throat and runny eyes, which she gave me NasaCort. She told me if I dont seen an improvement to call her. It has helped some, but I still have that awful taste in my mouth every now and then. For example, I cant take a big sniff in because that's what brings on the awful taste. She told me it could be year-round allergies. But what kind? We have 5 cats, and I know I'm not allergic to them. She said it could be them, mold, or dust mites. Maybe I could call an allergist. What kind of tests do they do?

Sorry that I haven't replied sooner Kim. You can develop allergies to anything at all over time, so it's quite possible you may have become allergic to your cats. The tests are not that bad at all...they either poke your arm or back with little pointed things and put a little of the different serums in each hole that correspond to different allergens. If you get a reaction, then they will know what you are allergic to and can treat it for you. The sooner you get treated, the better off you'll be. It sounds like it hurts, but believe me it doesn't. I had them back when I was about 4 years old and it didn't bother me a bit. I had it done a few years back too. You can check out www.allergycontrolproducts.com for advice about allergy proofing the home, but I wouldn't buy anything until you've seen an allergist and discussed it with him after you are tested. It could be all you need is some Zyrtec antihistamines or something.

Hi Kim,

I don't think the meds really take the drainage away. Actually, sometimes I think they might start it...not sure about that but it seems that way. I'm thinking that probably is good since they might be preventing other problems. Just my thoughts....
